Intercollegiate Sailing Advances to Atlantic Coast Championship Finals

Navy Wraps Action at Tom Curtis Regatta and Brazilian Naval Academy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team continued its fall season this weekend with the first round of the Co-Ed Atlantic Coast Championship series, along with the Tom Curtis Regatta and a regatta in Brazil.

With 36 teams split into two 18-team first-round events for the first round of the Atlantic Coast Championship, the top half of each field advance to the finals. Navy was sent to the event hosted the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. A very competitive fleet and variable winds made for a challenging event that saw everything from 2 to 20 knots.

The Midshipmen got off to a rough start, scoring four double-digit finishes in the first six races but righted the ship and slowly marched up the standings for the rest of the weekend. In the end, the teams finished fifth overall, a mere three points out of third place. Senior Gavin McJones, sophomore Ryan Wahba and freshman Ellie Alex finished fourth in the "A" Division while freshman Nathan Smith, junior Madeline Smith and senior Jonah Hatt were sixth in Division "B".

Five Navy boats also competed in the 18-boat Tom Curtis Regatta hosted by Georgetown in Alexandria, Va. After an afternoon of tight racing, sophomore Cooper Walshe and freshman Margo Cicero finished as the runner-up boat, while senior Caden Scheiblauer and sophomore Linnea Forsberg were third place, freshmen Jack Welburn and Darby Graham finished fifth, sophomore Robert Ziman and junior Hunter Anderson came in 12th and sophomore Izzy Fadullon and freshman Alex Brenda wound up 17th.

In addition to the regular slate of collegiate competition, Colin MacGillivray and Tanner Kelly joined members of the Navy offshore sailing team at the Regata Escola Naval in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, as the combined crew of Mids took first place in the J-24 class at the Brazilian Naval Academy.

Next up for Navy is the Truxtun Umsted Regatta in Annapolis, Md. (Oct. 15-16), the Washington College Fall Open Chestertown, Md. (Oct. 15-16) and the final round of the Women's Atlantic Coast Championships in Kings Point, N.Y. (Oct. 15-16).
