ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy track and field team opened up competition in the 2022-23 season, hosting the annual Navy Invitational I at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis, Md. The Midshipmen notched six total top-10 all-time performances, highlighted by
Brahmir Vick (Middletown, Del.) setting the school record in the 60m hurdles.
Vick opened competition with a time of 7.92 in the preliminaries of the 60m hurdles. The junior's prelim time tied for the fifth-best performance in program history. Vick shaved a tenth of a second off of his time in the finals to set a new program best, 7.82. The time topped the previous mark of 7.87, originally set by Clayton Thompson ('21) in his final season in 2021.
"Overall with the first meet, we are trying to figure out where we are," Director of Navy Track and Field / Cross Country
Jamie Cook said after the meet. "There were some good things and some things we need to improve on. Highlights for the day were
Brahmir Vick setting a school record in the hurdles, beating a pretty significant record set by Clayton Thompson. I was really proud of that performance. We had some newcomers step up today.
Molly Mangan ran a PR indoors in the 400m, just missing a school record.
"We have a chance to get better moving forward," Cook added. "We have a month [before our next meet] to get better and get after it."
In addition to Vick, the Midshipmen tallied four additional top-10 all-time performances.
Molly Mangan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) clocked a time of 54.83 in the 400m, which was the third fastest time in program history. The senior team captain finished five hundredths of a second off of the Navy school record. In the 60m hurdles, Jia Anderson won the event, tying the for the sixth-best performance in program history.
In the field events,
Hannah Lowenstein (Pompano Beach, Fla.) and
Molly Chapman (Leesburg, Va.) notched a pair of top-10 performances. Lowenstein cleared a height of 1.71m (5-07.25) in the high jump to tie for the sixth best jump in Navy history. Chapman's distance of 12.08m (37-07.75) in the triple jump was the eighth-best performance in the Midshipmen annals.
Navy finished the meet with 26 IC4A / ECAC qualifying times and marks. The men's team tallied 18 IC4A qualifiers, while the women's team notched eight ECAC marks.
On the men's side, Vick,
Caden Dailey (Centreville, Va.),
Jonah Johnson (Plano, Texas), and
Sethan Hollier (Baton Rouge, La.) notched IC4A qualifying times in the 60m dash, while Johnson,
Jacques Guillaume (Jacksonville, Fla.), Hollier, and Dailey added qualifiers in the 200m dash. Guillaume also posted an IC4A time in the 400m. Vick added two IC4A times with his preliminary and finals performance in the 60m hurdles. The distance events saw
Matt Newell (Columbus, Ind.) and
Carson Sloat (Pasadena, Md.) notch IC4A qualifying times in the 1,000m and 1-mile run, respectively.
Joshua Boamah (San Diego, Calif.) and
Collin Greene (Elkridge, Md.) each posted IC4A qualifying marks in the shot put and weight throw.
The Mids posted eight EAC qualifiers on the women's side. Mangan and
Helen West (Pinehurst, N.C.) clocked qualifiers in the 400m, while Anderson's time in the 60m hurdles final was an ECAC time. Lowenstein's height in the high jump was an ECAC qualifier, while
Stephanie Jacobs (Belleville, Ill.) posted a qualifying height in the pole vault. Chapman and
Sami Bollinger (Temecula, Calif.) registered qualifying marks in the triple jump, while
Autumn Nicholas (Houston, Texas) added an ECAC qualifying mark in the weight throw.
Navy will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 14 for its annual dual versus Princeton at the Wesley A. Brown Field House.
