Millen Randell (Jr / Chicago, Ill.) has been named the Naval Academy Athletic Association Co-Athlete of the Week presented by Northrop Grumman after leading the squash team to to a pair of upset victories over #23 Dickinson (6-3) and #14 Franklin & Marshall (5-4) over the weekend. Randell shares the week's honor with pole vaulter Walker Rudisaile, who broke the school record last weekend with his mark of 5.26m (17-03.00) to win the event at the Patriot Games hosted by George Mason.
On Friday, Randell overcame an 8-6 deficit in the fifth game of his match against Dickinson's Omar Ali at the No. 2 position to not only win the game (11-9) and his individual match (11-7, 7-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-9), but it also secured the team victory for the Mids.
In Sunday's match against Franklin & Marshall, Randell set the tone for the Mids as he captured the team's first win in the match by way of a 3-0 sweep over Teddy Eill once again at the No. 2 position. The see-saw match included three ties, but back-to-back wins by
Matt Wang (#3 / Fr / Malvern, Pa.) and
Henry Sparkman (#5 / So / Darien, Conn.) gave the Mids their first lead in the match at 3-2. The two teams split the remaining four matches, including a five-game victory by walk-on
Ben Balser (Jr / Brooklyn, N.Y.) at the #9 position to lift Navy to victory.
The win by Navy snapped the Diplomats' four-match winning streak.
Randell stands 13-6 on the year, amassing the second-most wins on the team behind rookie
Matt Wang.
The 26th-ranked Midshipmen will be back in action on Friday when they face Franklin & Marshall in the opening round of the Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference Championship. Action is slated to begin at 7:00 pm with the tournament being held in Lancaster, Pa.
