BOSTON, Mass. – The Navy track and field team sent four distance runners to Boston University for the 2022 BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational. The quartet each posted top 10 performances on the day, including
David Nelsen (Chandler, Ariz.) who broke the school record in the 1-mile run, marking the second ever sub-4-minute mile in program history.
Nelsen won his heat with a new school record time of 3:59.52, finishing the race in eighth place overall. The senior became the second Midshipmen to ever clock a time under four minutes in the mile, joining Jake Brophy ('20) who crossed the finish line with a then-school record time of 3:59.98 at BU as a senior in 2020.
Alex Rizzo (Bronxville, N.Y.) and
Ashwin Briggs (Pickerington, Ohio) also competed in the mile. Rizzo just missed going under four minutes, posting the third best time in Navy history with a time of 4:00.35. Briggs registered his best performance in the mile with the seventh-fastest time in Navy history (4:01.12) in the event.
Miguel Mathias (Nekoosa, Wisc.) also competed at the Boston University meet. The senior took part in the 3,000m run, recording the third fastest time in Navy history (7:55.80). Mathias finished just 0.68 seconds away from the school record (7:55.12), which was set by Cody Rome ('12) in 2011.
The Midshipmen continue the indoor campaign at home with the Navy Select on Friday, Feb. 18 at Wesley A. Brown Field House. Live results will be available throughout the meet.
