Women’s Golf Tallies 10th-Place Finish at the Low Country Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Navy women's golf team (0-0) completed play at the Low Country Intercollegiate Sunday, posting a 10th-place finish in the event hosted at the Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
 
The Midshipmen recorded a three-round score of 85-over par 949, highlighted by a second round 24-over par 312. Mara Hirtle (So., Pinehurst, N.C.) and Bridget Hoang (Fr., Lawrenceville, Ga.) both tallied a 12-over par 228, finishing tied for 13th in the field of 90 golfers as Navy's top performers in the tournament. 
 
"It was good to have the entire team play this weekend and competing in the Low Country Intercollegiate," said head coach Nadia Ste-Marie. "We will continue to work hard to get our games ready for the upcoming Patriot League Championship."
 
Hirtle, who competed as an individual, opened competition with a first-round score of 7-over par 79, before lowering her score in each of the next two rounds. The sophomore tallied a 3-over par 75 in Saturday's second round, prior to recording her best score of the three-round tournament on Sunday with a final-round mark of 2-over par 74, bringing Hirtle 14 spots up the leaderboard to round out the top-15 finish.
 
The third-round 74 by Hirtle fell just two strokes shy of the lowest round of her career, along with being the third-lowest round of her career.
 
Hoang, who also tallied an overall score of 12-over par 228, rose two spots on the final day of play with a 5-over par 77. The freshman opened play on Saturday with a 3-over par 75, her best score of the tournament, before adding a 4-over par 76 in Saturday's second round. Hoang's 76 in round two bested her season average by two strokes, while tying the fourth-best score for a single round in her career.
 
Following the duo of Hirtle and Hoang was Eve Worden (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.), finishing tied for 27th with a 17-over par 233 as an individual competitor. After opening competition with a 6-over par 78, the junior tallied an improved mark of 4-over par 76 in round two. In the third and final round of the tournament on Sunday, Worden added a 7-over par 79.
 
Angelina Chan (Jr., Franklin, Tenn.) finished tied for 41st with a 22-over par 238, highlighted by an opening-round score of 5-over par 77. The junior followed up her first round 77 with an 8-over par 80, before posting a 9-over par 81 on Sunday.
 
Stephanie Lee (So., Southlake, Texas), who took the No. 1 position amongst the Navy starting lineup, entered Sunday with a 10-over par 154 after posting a scores of 6-over par 78 and 4-over par 76 in rounds one and two, respectively. In Sunday's final round, Lee recorded her highest score of the tournament, a 14-over par 86, to finish tied for 46th.
 
Team captain Tori Smith (Sr., Arlington, Tenn.) finished tied for 61st, but did rise four spots on Sunday with her second-best score of the event, a 9-over par 81. Smith opened play on Saturday with a 13-over par 85, before tallying her lowest mark of the weekend in round two, an 8-over par 80, to round out a final score pf 30-over par 246.
 
Hannah Han-Kim (Fr., Potomac, Md.) finished four strokes behind Smith in a tie for 68th, tallying a 34-over par 250. The freshman posted a 14-over par 86 in round one, followed by her lowest score of the tournament at 9-over par 81 in round two. Han-Kim climbed moved up four spots on the leaderboard Sunday, recording a 11-over par 83.
 
Jenna Han (Fr., Mahwah, N.J.) rounded out the Navy presence in the field, placing tied for 73rd with a 37-over par 253 as an individual competitor. The newcomer posted solid scores in the first two rounds of competition on Saturday, a 12-over par 84 in round one and a 5-over par 77 in round two, but ultimately found trouble on Sunday with a final-round 20-over par 92.
 
Princeton was crowned the team champion of the Low Country Intercollegiate, recording a 24-over par 888. Additionally, the Tigers' Yanjun Liu garnered medalist honors, posting a 2-under par 214.
 
UP NEXT
Navy will have a quick turnaround, as it is slated to return to action March 28-29 for the Kingsmill Intercollegiate. The tournament is set to be hosted by William & Mary at the Kingsmill resort in Williamsburg, Va.
