BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Patriot League announced its weekly track and field honorees and five Navy student-athletes –
Miguel Mathias (Nekoosa, Wisc.), Katie Halbert (Keller, Texas),
Braden Presser (Liberty, Mo.), Hannah Lowenstein (Pompano Beach, Fla.), and
Joe Hurt (Carlsbad, Calif.) – each received accolades for their performances in the Army-Navy Outdoor Star Meet. Mathias and Halbert were named Men's and Women's Track Athlete of the Week, respectively, while Presser and Lowenstein took the Field honors. Hurt was selected as Men's Rookie of the Week.
The Navy men defeated Army, 107-93, while the women claimed a 117-86 victory over the Black Knights.
Mathias won the 5,000m run with a meet-record time of 13:57.28, claiming the event by nearly 10 seconds. The time was the fourth best in Navy history. Mathias' time is the top performance in the 5,000m in the Patriot League this season and ranks 61st in the NCAA in the event. Mathias' win clinched the victory for the Midshipmen against their rivals.
Halbert secured the 100m hurdles and 4x100m relay, while coming in second in the long jump for 13 of Navy's 117 points. Halbert set the Navy school record and the Army-Navy meet record in the 100m hurdles, clocking a time of 13.48, topping the Navy record by 0.35 seconds. She ran the opening leg of the 4x100m relay, combining for a time of 45.95, which set a new Navy and meet record. Halbert finished second in the long jump with a season-best jump of 5.72m (18-09.25).
Presser took the javelin with a meet-record distance of 71.99m (236-02). The distance was the third best in Navy history behind Jay Stell (73.81m) and his own PR (73.55m). Presser's distance in the javelin is the ninth best in the NCAA this season and second-best in the Patriot League behind his PR set earlier this season.
In her first competition of the season, Lowenstein won the high jump in her first competition of the season, posting a height of 1.73m (5-08.00). The jump tied for the third best in Navy history. Lowenstein's jump ranks 59th in the NCAA this season and is the top performance in the Patriot League so far this year.
Hurt claimed the triple jump at the annual Star Meet. The rookie posted a jump of 14.61m (47-11.25) to win the event. The jump was the 101st in the NCAA this season and tops in the Patriot League. It was the 13th best among freshmen in the NCAA this season.
Navy returns to action on Saturday, April 9 as the Midshipmen travel to Fairfax, Va. for the George Mason Spring Invitational.
