BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Navy track and field team continues to dominate the weekly Patriot League awards list, claiming four of the six spots in the latest selection. The Navy women swept the honors list with
Molly Mangan being named the Patriot League Women's Track Athlete of the Week,
Molly Chapman earning the Patriot League Women's Field Athlete of the Week and
Sophie Compton collecting the Patriot League Women's Rookie of the Week. For the men,
Baynes Autrey was named the Patriot League Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the Patriot League announced Tuesday, Jan. 24.
Mangan missed Navy's program record in the 400m by .01 seconds at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational, crossing the finish line in 54.80 seconds to claim first place. Mangan also helped set a top-10 mark in the women's 4x400m relay. Along with
Sabrina Sutter,
Helen West and
Kylie Bedard, the squad finished with the ninth-fastest time in Navy history at 3:48.01. Mangan has now earned two track athlete of the week awards this season and six in her career.
Chapman competed in the long jump for the first time this season in Navy's last meet and jumped the sixth-furthest distance in the record book at 5.85m (19' 2.5"). Her mark also ranks first in the Patriot League this season. She earned her first Patriot League weekly accolade of the 2022-23 campaign and second in her career.
Compton competed in the second meet of her collegiate career and helped the Mids post a top-10 time in the distance medley relay. The squad of Compton,
Ellie Abraham,
Emily Ettrich and
Elizabeth Sullivan took first place in the event with the third-best time in Navy's record book at 11:52.79. Compton also competed in her first collegiate 1-mile event and took second with an ECAC qualifying time of 4:53.03. Her mile time ranks third best in the conference and was just .39 seconds off of being a Navy top-10 time.
Autrey ended with a Navy top-10 mark in his first heptathlon of the year, posting the fourth most points all-time with 5,474. His point total gives him the best finish in the Patriot League and the sixth-best in the nation this season. He recorded an IC4A qualifying time in the 60m hurdles to place first in 8.16 seconds, while also claiming first in the pole vault with a height of 4.67m (15' 3.75") and in the 1,000m with a time of 2:49.21. Navy's team captain took second in three events, which included a qualifying mark in the long jump at 7.07m (23' 2.5"). His numbers in the 60m hurdles, pole vault, 1,000m and long jump were all personal bests.
The Mids will look to set more program records later this week when they compete in the Patriot Games hosted by George Mason in Fairfax, Va. The meet begins Friday, Jan. 27 with the multi-events at 4:00 p.m. and the 5,000m at 6:00 p.m. The meet continues Saturday, Jan. 28 with the field events at 10:00 a.m. and running events at 9:30 a.m.
