Intercollegiate Sailing Finishes Second at the Washington College Team Race

Mids Place Fifth in Navy Spring Women’s Fleet Race, Take Seventh in St. Mary’s Team Race

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team returned in full to Maryland this weekend for one home regatta and two road competitions.

At home, the Midshipmen hosted the 18-team Navy Spring Women's Fleet Race in Annapolis, boasting a deep field with teams from all over the country. The weekend saw cold weather with extremely puffy and shifty winds, creating challenges for sailors. On the course, Navy posted some great races to go along with some challenging race to emerge fifth overall, as sophomores Evie Blauvelt and Maggie Schuler and junior Julia Christie worked together to finish sixth in the "A" division while juniors Aubin Hattendorf and Catherine Aitken also claimed sixth place in the "B" division.

The biggest and most challenging regatta of the weekend took place at the St. Mary's Team Race in St. Mary's City, Md., where 16 highly-ranked teams dealt with very puffy and volatile winds, making racing challenging on a number of fronts and forcing changes to the event format. Based on early results, Navy was placed in the Gold-8 and sailed a round robin among the other top teams, but a few tough losses early coupled with a few more late left the Mids in seventh place at the end of the regatta. Skippering the Navy boats were senior Gavin McJones, sophomore Cooper Walshe and freshmen Nathan Smith and Jack Welburn, with crews consisting of seniors Jonah Hatt and Colin MacGillivray, junior Madeline Smith, sophomore Ryan Wahba and freshman Ellie Alex

Additionally, eight teams from the Mid-Atlantic participated at the Washington College Team Race in Chestertown, Md., which featured a strong current to go along with volatile winds seen across Maryland all weekend. Due to the protected venue, The Mids were able to get a lot of good racing in at the event and deliver the team its best finish of the weekend, coming in second overall with a 14-7 record. Navy's team consisted of sophomore skippers Izzy Fadullon and Robert Ziman and freshman skipper Ava Farley, while the crews had junior Hunter Anderson, sophomore Linnea Forsberg and freshman Margo Cicero.

Navy continues the spring season this weekend with the Admiral Moore Team Race in Kings Point, N.Y., the Hanbury Trophy in Newport News, Va., and the Jen Harris Team Race in Annapolis.
