JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Navy men's track and field team had four athletes and the 4x400m relay squad compete during day three of the NCAA East Preliminaries on Friday in Jacksonville, Fla.
Joshua Boamah began the day in the discus and placed 32nd with a throw of 52.62m (172' 8"). The rising senior also placed 40th in the shot put (16.98m (55' 8.5") and competed in the hammer throw on Wednesday.
"It's extremely difficult for an athlete to qualify for three events and for Joshua (Boamah) to compete in all three events after a long season shows how tough of a competitor he is," said Director of Track and Field / Cross Country
Jamie Cook. "He had an outstanding year for us and I'm excited to see how he continues to grow as a competitor and a leader heading into his senior season."
Brett Brady concluded his career with a 30th-place finish in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:05.76.
Tom Fodor also competed in the race and placed 43rd with a time of 9:22.23.
Brady received the Coaches' Calvert Award on Thursday from the Naval Academy Athletic Association. The award is presented to a graduating letter winner (one male, one female) who made a significant contribution to the success of varsity athletics while a midshipman. The recipients must exemplify outstanding qualities of athletic leadership, athletic loyalty and acceptable academic efforts.

"Brett (Brady) has been another exceptional leader for us as a captain of the cross country team and a terrific role model during his final track and field season. He always wants to compete and put his best foot forward," said Cook. It was a huge honor to see him win the Coaches' Calvert Award and it was well deserving. He has been a tremendous leader for us and has excelled in competition throughout his four years. A big thank you to him and our other captains from this season, Winter Boese,
Baynes Autrey, Molly Mangan,
Sam Kwatkosky and Molly Chapman. Those six worked hard all season to bring this program to another level and leave it in a better place than when they came in.
"Tom (Fodor) is proof that if you put the work in to get better then good things will happen. When you consistently put good effort in and you have some intent, you progress in the right direction," said Cook. "Him and coach (Aaron) Lanzel have done a fantastic job this season and we're looking for great things from him next year in both cross country and track and field."
The 4x400m relay team of
Pete deJonge,
Nathan Kent,
Jay Evans and
Jacques Guillaume placed fifth in their heat and took 15th place overall with a time of 3:10.19. The squad finished just one second behind Louisville who claimed the final automatic qualifying spot by finishing in third place in the heat (3:09.19).
"The 4x400m team gave a good effort, but it was tough to come that close to qualifying and not quite get in. We didn't run as good of a race as we would have liked to, but we have a lot to build on from this season and I know this core will continue to get better," said Cook.
Kent also competed in the 400m quarterfinal and placed 20th with a time of 47.78. Along with continuing to make strides on the track, the Rocklin, Calif., native will also get ready for his second season as a wide receiver for the Navy football team.
Hannah Lowenstein will be the final Mid competing at the East Preliminaries tomorrow in the high jump at 2:30 p.m.
She will look to join
Braden Presser as a qualifier for the NCAA Outdoor Championship. Presser qualified for nationals in the javelin on Wednesday by placing second with a school-record mark of 75.95m (249' 2").
