FAIRFAX, Va. - The Navy track and field teams combined to win five events at the Patriot Games hosted by George Mason on Saturday at the GMU Field House in Fairfax, Va.
The meet featured 16 programs and did not have team scoring.
Joshua Boamah and
Jordynn Hutchinson highlighted the meet for the Mids for their efforts in the weight throw.
Boamah won the men's weight throw by posting the second-best distance in school history at 20.94m (68' 8"). His mark is only .08m short of the school record that he set against Princeton on Jan. 13. The senior has recorded the top-three weight throw distances in Navy history this season. Additionally, Boamah won the shot put with an IC4A qualifying mark of 17.44m (57' 2.75").
Hutchinson recorded the first top-10 weight throw mark in her career to win the event. She posted a top distance of 18.97m (62' 3"), which ranks seventh all-time in school history. Hutchinson also registered a third-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 12.78m (41' 11.25").
"The mission was accomplished today as far as taking care of what we needed to take care of. We saw a lot of progress that we hope to carry into next week and through the rest of the season. This was a good opportunity for our athletes to set personal records, climb up into the rankings and build more confidence," said Associate Head Coach
Chris Campbell. "Jordynn (Hutchinson) and Josh (Boamah) both had great marks in the weight throw. The sky is the limit for Josh. He could throw even farther over the course of the season and will hopefully have another great outing next week. Jordynn put things together for the first time this season. She missed our first meet in December, but has made great progress over the last few weeks to get to where she is now.
"We always encourage everyone to compete as hard as they can at every meet and this was an opportunity for a lot of our younger athletes to do that for the first time. It was also a great experience for athletes who haven't traveled with the team before. To get on the bus and show up for a meet without knowing where everything is helps them gain valuable experience. They have to struggle through figuring out how to warm up properly, where you can warm up, checking in properly and checking implements for the first time at a meet on the road. I think the team weathered that storm very well today and it's exciting to see how everyone is continuing to come together as we head into Army next week."
Colin Greene also posted a pair of qualifying marks in the shot put (16.68m / 54' 8.75") and weight throw (19.23m / 63' 1") to place second and third, respectively.
Dane Vernor finished in eighth place in the weight throw with the additional qualifying distance of 17.93m (58' 10").
Sean Miller and
Tate Frost accounted for the two victories in the track events. Miller won the 3,000m with a collegiate-best time of 8:30.34. Frost claimed first place in the 800m with a time of 1:57.05.
Sam Moultrie posted the best time of the 11 mids who ran in the mile. He finished third overall with a qualifying time of 4:14.16.
