BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Navy swimming and diving teams swept all four Patriot League weekly awards which were announced on Tuesday. Siblings
Caroline Irwin and
Ben Irwin were named the league's swimmers of the week,
Mackenzie Kim was named the women's diver of the week and
Blakeman Shaw received the men's diver-of-the-week accolade.
The honors were presented for the efforts by the Mids during Navy's meet against Penn State on Saturday. Navy lost the women's meet by the score of 158-142 and the men's meet by the count of 172-128.
Caroline Irwin received her first weekly award from the league by being part of three victories against the Nittany Lions. Individually, she won the 50 free by two-hundredths of a second with her effort of 23.69 and then posted a time of 54.87 to win the 100 fly by almost six-tenths of a second. Irwin also swam the butterfly leg on Navy's winning 200 medley relay team and anchored the second-place finishing 400 free relay team.
This is Kim's eighth weekly award from the Patriot League and she garnered it by winning both boards against Penn State. She totaled 251.33 points to win the one-meter event by five-hundredths of a point and 252.98 points to place first by 6.30 points in the three-meter competition.
Like his sister,
Ben Irwin won the first weekly nod of his career this week. He began the meet by swimming the opening backstroke leg on Navy's winning 200 medley relay team. After a second-place finish in the 100 back with his time of 48.62, Irwin posted an effort of 1:46.77 to win the 200 back by seven-tenths of a second. He also had a third-place showing in the 100 fly (49.65).
Shaw is now a six-time recipient of the men's diver-of-the-week laurel. He earned this week's award after he scored 307.20 points to win the one-meter by 16 points and placed second by 33 points in the three-meter competition with his score of 285.60 points. His one-meter score bettered the NCAA Zone Diving Championship qualifying standard of 300 points.
The Navy teams will return to Lejeune Hall Saturday for an 11 a.m. meet against UMBC and William & Mary.
