BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Navy men's lacrosse standout
Zach Hayashi (Fr / FO / North Potomac, Md.) has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week following a career performance in the Mids' 16-8 win over Hofstra last Saturday. In addition to Hayashi, Boston's Vince D'Alto (offense), Patrick Morrison (defense) and Will Barnes (goalkeeper), along with Army's Will Coletti (faceoff) were among those players recognized by the league office as players of the week at their respective positions.
This is the second-consecutive week Hayashi has garnered recognition from the Patriot League. The Navy newcomer was named the league's faceoff specialist of the week following a 14 for 21 (66.7) effort in the win over Mount St. Mary's. He followed up with a 16 for 23 (69.6) performance in the Mids' victory over Hofstra recording career highs in wins, attempts and winning percentage. He won a staggering 10 of 12 draws in the opening half (7-8 / 3-4), helping facilitate getting the ball into the hands off the offense and allowing the Mids to roll off six-consecutive goals en route to an 8-2 halftime lead. The 16 faceoff wins are tied as the sixth most during the Joe Amplo era, while Hayashi's winning percentage is the eighth best.
Hayashi is the 17th different Navy player to earn Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors since the Mids joined the Patriot League in 2004. Navy has three other players on its 2024 roster who have previously won the award -
Jon Jarosz (2x in 2021),
Henry Tolker (3x in 2022) and
Mac Haley (1x in 2023).
Navy will play its first road game of 2024 when it makes the drive to Towson on Saturday to battle the Tigers (1-1). Faceoff is set for 12:00 pm at Johnny Unitas Stadium and the game will be streamed on Flosports. Meanwhile, Pete Medhurst will have the radio call on 1430 AM / 99.9 FM WNAV.
