Towson Deals Navy Men’s Lacrosse Its First Loss of 2024

Box Score TOWSON, Md. —  Nick DeMaio and Mikey Weisshaar combined for 8 goals and 7 assists to lead the Towson men's lacrosse team (2-1) to a 17-5 win over an undefeated Navy team (2-1) Saturday afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson. The Tigers jumped out to a 5-1 lead and never looked back, building an 11-3 lead  by halftime en route to the program's 500th victory.

"We didn't punch back today," said fifth-year Navy head coach Joe Amplo. "The prerequisites to our team - toughness, hard-nose on the ground balls, playing together - those things existed in the first two weeks, they didn't exist today. I give Towson a ton of credit. I told our team that Towson played the way we want to play; they looked like we should look. They came ready to play. They played hard and physical and we didn't. We got punched in the mouth and didn't respond. That's disappointing."

Towson scored three goals in the opening three-plus minutes of the contest, including a pair of unassisted strikes by DeMaio, who would end the game with a career-high 9 points (4 goals, 5 assists).

Navy finally answered at the 7:12 mark when Dane Swanson (Sr / M / St. Mary's City, Md.) found Mac Haley (So / A / Shady Side, Md.) settled in on the right side of the crease for his fifth goal of the year.

Towson, though, would respond by scoring four in a row and holding the Mids off the scoreboard for nearly 12 minutes as the Tigers built a 7-1 lead early in the second period.

Jon Jarosz (Sr / M / Gambrills, Md.) and Will Schiffenhaus (Sr / A / Montclair, N.J.) worked together to briefly stem the tide with a Jarosz goal at the 9:53 mark in the second quarter, however, the Tigers went on to outscore Navy 4-1 over the final seven minutes of the half to hold an 11-3 lead at the break.

The Tigers opened up a double-digit lead by scoring the first-three goals of the second half before Navy's Henry Tolker (Jr / A / Catonsville, Md.) was credited with his second goal of the game. Teammate Evan Conway (Jr / M / Charleston, S.C.) got off a shot that appeared to bounce off a Towson player and ricocheted off Tolker and into the goal.

Towson went on to score three of the final four goals in the game, including each of the last two in capturing the victory.

Navy's struggles came at both ends of the field. The Mids came into the contest ranked 10th nationally in shooting percentage (36.8), however, they managed just 5 goals on 38 shots. Meanwhile, the defense stood seventh in the country, allowing just 7.00 goals per game, but allowed the first double-digit game by an opponent this season.

Zach Hayashi (Fr / FO / North Potomac, Md.), who has twice been honored by the Patriot League, put together a strong performance against one of the top faceoff men in Towson history. Junior Matt Constantinides narrowly edged the Navy rookie with a 14-12 advantage thanks to winning 3 of the final 4 draws in the game. Constantinides, meanwhile, took sole possession of fifth on Towson's all-time faceoff wins list with 389 over three seasons.

Towson's starting offense accounted for 13 of the team's 17 goals and 10 of the 11 assists. Meanwhile, the Tiger defense forced 11 of Navy's 19 turnovers.

Navy will be back in action next Saturday when it plays host to 14th-ranked Penn State (2-1). Faceoff is slated for 12:00 pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium with Pete Medhurst and Joe Miller calling the action on ESPN+ and 1430 AM / 99.9 FM WNAV
