ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) announced its postseason awards over the weekend and a pair of Midshipmen –
Isabella Baldwin and
Marleigh Duncan – combined for six All-Conference honors for shooting, while
Clarissa Layland was selected as Navy's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Additionally, the Navy rifle team earned the conference's Sportsmanship Award.
Baldwin was tabbed Second Team All-GARC in smallbore, air rifle, and combined. Duncan earned second-team distinction in smallbore and aggregate, while being named honorable mention in air rifle.
In smallbore, Baldwin averaged 587.3 in six GARC matches to earn second-team accolades. The freshman also claimed second-team honors in air rifle with an average of 593.7. She completed the sweep of each discipline with second-team laurels in aggregate with a total of 1181.0.
Duncan was a second-team honoree in smallbore and aggregate, notching totals of 585.8 and 1179.0, respectively. The junior was an honorable mention selection in air rifle, posting an average of 593.2 in the event.
Academically, Layland recorded a perfect 4.0 grade point average in the fall to represent the team as Navy's Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the GARC. Each team in the conference has one honoree based off of grades in the fall semester.
Over the weekend, the Navy rifle team finished fifth at the GARC Championship hosted by Army at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center. The Midshipmen finished the first day of competition in sixth place after the smallbore competition, but improved to fifth overall with a fifth-place showing in air rifle.
Top-ranked West Virginia claimed the 2024 GARC Championship with an aggregate score of 4759. The Mountaineers were followed by Kentucky who tallied 4737 points. Ole Miss (4717) and Memphis (4714) followed with Navy rounding out the top five with 4703 total points. Akron (4701) finished sixth with championship host Army (4683) coming in seventh.
Kentucky's Braden Peiser (1194 points) claimed the individual title, while West Virginia followed with the next four individual finishers – Gavin Barnick (1193), Mary Tucker (1190), Griffin Lake (1188), and Molly McGhin (1187).
For Navy, Baldwin led the way for the Midshipmen. The rookie tallied 1181 aggregate points in her first GARC Championship. Duncan was one point back, registering an aggregate tally of 1180, while Layland recorded 1174 points in her final GARC Championship. Freshman
Ryan Wee finished the weekend with a score of 1168, while sophomore
Catherine Dely and junior
Joshua Potts both recorded aggregate scores of 1160. Junior
Stephanie Milvain contributed a score of 1154 with sophomore
Devin Uhrich rounding out the Navy scoring with an 1143.
Up next, Navy will compete in the 2024 NCAA Rifle Championship, which is hosted by West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va., on March 8-9.
