ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The #7 Navy rifle team (4-2) recorded 5891 total points to win the President's Trophy Match against its service academy counterparts for the first time since 2008. The win by the Midshipmen snapped Air Force's streak of 11 consecutive victories in the match.
"This was a very important match for us today," head coach
Mike Anti said after the match. "To compete against all the other academies is always a high-pressure situation and our athletes were up for the challenge.
"Air Force had won the trophy for the past 11 years so it is great to bring it back to Navy. This win was truly a team effort in the preparation for this match. Our athletes pushed each other for the past two weeks leading up to this match.
"Unlike normal NCAA matches the President's Trophy is an eight-man team match so it is important to have depth. We demonstrated that today. Not only did we win the team event, but we also swept the individual awards, which may be a first. This was a team goal and I am very proud of our team. I know they are very happy to come out on top."
The President's Trophy Match features eight starters for both teams and the five highest scores among the starters count toward the team score for the President's Trophy, while traditional NCAA scoring is five starters with the highest four scores by the starters counting.
