ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Murphy Smith and
Sheldon Ulmer, members of the Patriot League Championship-winning Navy men's indoor track and field team, have been named to the Men's Indoor Track and Field Academic All-Patriot League Team.
To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have attained at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average at their respective school and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen and students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
A first-time selection to the Academic All-Patriot League Team, Smith is a quantitative economics major who has posted a 3.27 GPA. Additionally, he has earned academic honors at the Academy in six of his eight completed semesters.
At the Patriot League Indoor Championship last weekend, Smith won the 5,000m with a time of 14:04.85. The senior from Charlotte, N.C., also placed second in the 3,000m with a time of 8:08.46.
Ulmer, a sophomore from Greensboro, N.C., is also a first-time recipient of the league's academic award. A robotics & control engineering major, Ulmer owns a 3.40 GPA and has been recognized five times by the Academy for his academic success. He ranks 121st out of 1,114 in the Class of 2027 in the Military Order of Merit.
At last week's Patriot League Indoor Championship, he recorded a career-best jump of 2.10m (6' 10.75") to finish second in the high jump.
