ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team continued the spring season this past weekend with a pair of regattas, winning a conference championship at home as well as sending a group of Midshipmen up north.
Â
Hosting the MAISA Team Race Championship in Annapolis to award the Prosser Trophy, the No. 1-seeded Mids welcomed the top eight teams in the league rankings. The Saturday saw light winds that made the racing progress slowly as, after a few delays, the day ended one race shy of a complete round robin. Navy started the day strong and kept the momentum going to finish the day with a 6-0 record. Sunday started with another wind delay but the teams were eventually able to start racing just before noon.Â
Â
With the first round finished and the second round underway, the championship was on pace to finish the round in time before decreasing winds forced the second round to be abandoned and the first-round results to stand as final. Navy ended up first overall with a 7-0 record to claim the Prosser Trophy for the first time since 2022. Sailing for the Mids were skippers
Tanner Kelly,
Nathan Smith,
Jack Welburn and
Henry Allgeier and crews
Ryan Wahba,
Ellie Alex,
Darby Graham and
Fiona Cullen, while
Spencer Dominguez and
Owen MacWilliams were Navy's reserves. The win secured Navy an automatic berth at the ICSA Team Race National Championship, being hosted by Brown University on April 24-26.Â
Â
With Navy also sending a contingent of Mids to the Yale Women's Team Race in New Haven, Conn., that event saw wet and rough conditions on Saturday and very light wind on Sunday. Navy got off to a rough start but was able to score a win late in the round robin competition, finishing sixth overall in the eight-team regatta. Sailing for Navy were skippers
Evie Blauvelt,
Ava Farley and
Kate Zurinskas with crews
Maggie Schuler,
Darby Dryden,
Eva Ottenbreit,
Josie Sherry and
Sarah McNelly.
