LAKE BLUFF, Ill. // Navy's
Chip Deegan (Sr / Newport Beach, Calif.) closed out the two-day, 54-hole Jackson T. Stephens Cup by shooting a par-210 to tie for 16th among the field of 37 individuals. Deegan, who was the top-finishing service academy player in the tournament, was one of six golfers who received a special invitation to play as an individual in the team-scored event held at Shoreacres in Lake Bluff, Ill.
Deegan shot below par (69, -1) in the opening and closing rounds, while Tuesday afternoon's second round he turned in a 2-over par 72. Deegan was just a stroke out of the top 13 and two back from the top 11.
LSU claimed the team title in the stroke play portion of the tournament by 3 strokes over North Carolina. The Tigers were strong from start to finish (278-268-280=826 / -14). They opened the tournament with a 2-under par 278, but broke open a substantial lead in the second round where the Tigers finished 12-under (268) on the day. LSU wrapped up the title by shooting par on Tuesday afternoon. North Carolina opened the tournament with a 1-stroke advantage over LSU, but could not match the Tigers' second round. The Tar Heels finished with an 11-under par 829 (277-273-279), just a stroke ahead of Arizona (279-276-275=830 / -10). Northwestern finished fourth (837 / -3), followed by Texas (838 / -2) and SMU (844 / +4).
SMU's William Sides took individual medalist honors with a 7-under par 203, while LSU's Gunnlaugur Arni Sveinsson was the runner-up and 2 strokes back from Sides.
LSU will square off against North Carolina on Wednesday in match play for the tournament title.
Meanwhile, Emma Tang (72-78-86=236) and Hallie Brisco (90-86-77=253) represented Navy in the women's tournament and finished 34th and 35th, respectively.
The Jackson T. Stephens Cup is named in memory of the late Augusta National Chairman Jackson T. Stephens, who attended the Naval Academy and graduated as a member of the Class of 1947. The field at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium is named Jack Stephens Field, whose gift of $10 million in 2003 aided in the renovations of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, as well as a handful of other projects part of the United States Naval Academy Campaign: Leaders to Serve the Nation.

Navy returns to action this weekend when it plays host to The Goat at the Naval Academy Golf Club. The two-day, 54-hole tournament begins on Saturday at 8:30 am with a shotgun start.
