ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Making his third appearance in the championship match of the Naval Academy's annual Barb Tournament, junior squash standout Jack Herold (Chicago, Ill.) dealt defending Barb champion Senen Ubina (Greenwich, Conn.) a 3-1 loss to win the trophy for the first time. As a freshman, Herold lost to three-time winner Andrew McGuinness and dropped last year's match to Ubina.
Established in 1957 by the late Admiral Eugene Fluckey, a Medal of Honor recipient, the Barb has seen 39 different midshipmen win the coveted trophy. Fourteen men have claimed ownership of the trophy multiple times with five players (Spencer Wall 84-86, Jamie Slough 92-94, Andy McCann 00-02, Tucker George 05-08, Andrew McGuinness 12, 14-15) winning it three times. Herold will receive a ships clock at the Prizes and Awards ceremony during Commissioning Week and his name will be engraved on the Barb Trophy.
Herold won matches against Joshua Shamrakov (3-0), Michael Kacergis (3-2) and Dylan Sweeney (3-1) en route to making his third Barb Tournament finals appearance, while Ubina captured victories over Lunsford Schock (3-0), Jamie Kjorlien (3-0) and Will Walker (3-2) to punch his ticket into the championship bout.
Herold scored an 11-7 win in the opening game against Ubina, who then bounced back with an 11-8 victory to knot the match at one apiece. Herold, however, went on to win games three (11-4) and four (11-6) to sew up his first Barb title.
The remaining matches went as follows: Dylan Sweeney (So., New York, N.Y.) and Will Walker (Sr., Scarborough, N.Y.) played an incredible match that lasted nearly two hours with Sweeney topping Walker in five games a (11-3, 14-12, 6-11, 9-11, 11-5) to earn the No. 3 spot, freshman Owen Davis (Rydal, Pa.) came from behind to earn a 3-2 victory (11-8, 6-11, 9-11, 11-2, 12-10) over Jamie Kjorlien (So., Greenwich, Conn.) to take the No. 5 position, rookie Michael Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) swept (11-3, 11-6, 11-7) team captain Randy Beck (Sr., Lafayette Hill, Pa.) for No. 7, Reed Whitney (Sr., Ladue, Mo.) blanked (11-0, 11-2, 11-7) Greg Hyer (Tenafly, N.J.) for the No. 9 position, while Alex Patricolo (So., Southampton, N.Y.) edged out Sam McCartney (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) in four games (7-11, 11-3, 11-9, 12-10) for the No. 11 spot.
The week-long Barb Tournament pits the Navy squash players against one another in a round robin competition which then sets up an elimination tournament. The tournament results determine Navy's starting lineup to begin the season which is slated to officially kick off Wednesday with a scrimmage against the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
The Midshipmen will also put on a clinic in conjunction with SquashDrive at Cal on Friday afternoon. SquashDrive is a non-profit afterschool enrichment program for underserved Bay Area youth. We help students reach their academic, athletic, and personal potential through individualized educational support, squash instruction, and enrichment programming. SquashDrive provides over 8 hours per week of transformative programming to 4th through 10th graders from 12 partner schools.
Navy will close out its trip to California on Saturday with a pair of matches at Stanford (11:00 am PT / 2:00 pm ET) and vs. Cal (1:30 pm PT / 4:30 pm ET).
