Gould Leads Patriot League Championship; Women’s Golf Sits in Second Place

Navy trails Boston University by one shot heading into the final round on Sunday

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – The Navy women's golf team posted the lowest second-round score during the Patriot League Championship to move up to second place in the field and is one stroke off the lead. Freshman Shannon Gould (O'Fallon, Mo.) leads the 33-golfer field after recording a 3-over par 147 on the first day at Independence Golf Club.
 
Navy finished the first day of competition with a 35-over par 611 and Boston University currently leads the field with a 34-over par 610. Host Richmond sits in third place at 38-over par 614. Rounding out the top-five is Lehigh at 55-over par 631 and Bucknell at 61-over par 637.
 
The Midshipmen were sitting in fourth place after the first round on Saturday after firing a 22-over par 310 in the round but Navy posted the low round of the day at 13-over par 301 in the second round to move up two spots to second and one shot behind Boston -- who led after both rounds.
 
Gould is currently holding the 36-hole individual lead of Navy after posting a first-round score of 2-over par 74, followed by a 1-over par 73. Gould is the field leader in par-four scoring and is 2-over par on all par fours through the first two rounds and her 27 pars also lead the field. The freshman has also gone 1-under -- third in the field -- on par fives.
 
Christine McDonnell (So., Suwanee, Ga.) is sitting in fifth place at 8-over par 152. She carded a 5-over par 77 in round one and then cut two strokes off her score in round two with a 3-over par 75. Between the two rounds on Saturday, McDonnell moved from 10th all the way up to fifth place.
 
Katie Um (So., Chesapeake, Va.) and Morgan Frazier (Jr., Mechanicsburg, Pa.) are tied for 10th place with matching 13-over par 157s. Um posted rounds over 9-over par 81 and 4-over par 76 and she is currently tied for the field lead with five birdies through 36 holes. Frazier was the lone Mid to not cut down on her score from round one to round two. Frazier fired a 6-over par 78 to start the day and then shot a 7-over par 79 during her second 18.
 
Amelia Root (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) sits in 21st overall at 17-over par 161 and Jacqueline Cherry (Fr., Ellicott City, Md.) is tied for 23rd with a 20-over par 164. Root finished the first round at 10-over par 82 and then completed the day with a 7-over par 79. Cherry made the best improvement in the field from round one to round two on Saturday. She shot a 15-over par 87 in the opening round but cut 10 shots off her round two score with a 5-over par 77 to close out the day. 
 
On the individual leaderboard, defending Patriot League medalist Sophie DiPetrillo of Richmond is second behind Gould at 4-over par 148 with Hanako Kawasaki from Boston in third at 5-over par 149.
 
On Sunday, the Midshipmen will be paired with Boston and Richmond and teeing off the first hole at 8:30 a.m. Gould will be paired with both DiPetrillo and Kawasaki in the final group on Sunday that will tee off at 9:20 a.m. on the front nine.
