Strong Doubles Results Highlight Navy’s Weekend at Milwaukee Tennis Classic

| Box Score 3 MILWAUKE, Wis. – Navy's Greg Durham (Sr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and Derrick Thompson (So., Towson, Md.) won a pair of matches to advance to the quarterfinal round of the doubles competition at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic this weekend.  Additionally at the tournament, Thompson reached the second round of the singles draw.

The Navy duo began the 32-team draw by knocking off the tournament's No. 8 seeded team, William Kirkman and Mandresy Rakotomalala from Arizona State, 8-5, in the first round.  The Mids then defeated the Princeton pairing of Bill Duo and Damian Rodriguez, 9-8, in the round of 16.  Durham and Thompson won the tiebreaker by the score of 8-6.

The tournament's top-seeded team, Cal's Paul Barretto and Can Kaya, stopped the run by the Mids in the quarterfinals by winning an 8-5 decision.

"As good as Greg and Derrick were in singles," said Navy associate head coach John Moreland, who was in Milwaukee, "they were even better in doubles. They beat the No. 9 seed on day one then followed that up with a win over Princeton after saving four match points against them.  They then played the No. 1 seed and defending champions from Cal tough and had opportunities to break them.  We came up just short but could not be happier with how they performed over these three days."

In singles, Thompson rallied after losing the opening set of his match to Tadas Babelis from North Carolina State to win in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.  Thompson would fall in the second round to 10th-seeded Alex Kobelt from UNLV, 6-2, 6-2.

Durham lost his first-round singles match to ninth-seeded Axel Nefve from Notre Dame, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-1.

"Greg had a very good first-round match with Axel Nefve, who should play No. 2 singles at Notre Dame this year," said Moreland.  "He came close to the upset but fell just short in the end.  Derrick had an amazing come-from-behind win after losing the first set and rallying to defeat N.C. State's No. 3 singles player from last season."

The Milwaukee Tennis Classic is in its 44th year of existence making it the longest running collegiate tennis tournament in the country outside of the NCAA Tournament.  One of the unique traditional aspects of the tournament is that all of the players stay with local host families during the course of the weekend.

"It has been a very rewarding event for our guys, both on and off the court," said Moreland.  "The Tasker family was great hosts during our stay and gave the guys a place to relax and helped to ensure that they were ready every day.

"This tournament is one of the highlights of the entire fall collegiate schedule.  It is always a thrill to have the opportunity to participate in such a prestigious and well-run event.  We once again are grateful for the efforts of (tournament founder) Chas Mulcahy and the entire Milwaukee Tennis Classic board for putting on the tournament and inviting us to be part of it."

The remainder of the men's tennis team will start its fall season this weekend.  Andrew Ton (Jr., Milpitas, Calif.) will play in the Oracle ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif., and the rest of the squad will take part in the Navy-hosted Joe Hunt Invite,
