Making its inaugural appearance in the Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference (MASC) Championship, the 18th-ranked Navy squash team (7-12) dropped its opening-round match to #12 George Washington (9-8), 8-1, Friday evening at Squash On Fire in Washington, D.C. The seven-team conference tournament will continue Saturday with the Mids facing seventh-seeded Dickinson at 12:15 pm at Lerner Health & Wellness Center on the campus of George Washington.
The Highlights
• While six of the nine matches went extra frames, Navy's lone win of the night came at the #6 position where
Ben Korn (So, Stevenson, Md.) picked up a 3-2 victory. Korn won the opening game, 11-8, and from there on out he and GW's David Varela exchanged wins. Korn capped the victory with an 11-9 win in the fifth.
• Korn is now 2-0 against GW foes this year, as he posted a 3-2 victory over Lucas Stauffer during the regular season. Meanwhile, Varela has twice lost to a Navy foe, as he fell against
Ryan York (So, Hunt Valley, Md.) in four games during the regular season.
• Seniors
Owen Davis (Rydal, Pa.) and
Michael Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.), along with sophomore
Gus Prager (New York, N.Y.) and rookie
Millen Randell (Chicago, Ill.) each took their opponents to four games. All four players won the first of their match before succumbing, 3-1.
