Intercollegiate Sailing Finishes Third at MAISA Fall Women’s Championship

The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in two events over the weekend, highlighted by a third-place finish at the MAISA Fall Women’s Championship.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team finished third at the MAISA Fall Women's Championship to highlight its participation in two events over the weekend.

Hosted by Hobart and William Smith College, the Midshipmen got off to a strong start on the first day of racing by compiling finishes of 2, 2 and 1 in the first A Division set. A B Division set along with another A Division set were completed before racing was called for the day, setting the Mids up in prime position to rise in the standings on Sunday.

Following a rough start on Sunday, Navy rebounded and was able to compile a third-place overall finish in the 14-team event. Olivia de Olazarra (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and Madeline Smith (So., Nokomis, Fla.) posted a dominating win in the A Division, averaging less than two points per race in the 10-event series. Evie Blauvelt (Fr., Marietta, Ga.), Carlyn Blauvelt (Jr., Marietta, Ga.) and Izzy Fadullon (Fr., Annapolis, Md.) finished ninth in the B Division.

The War Memorial Regatta serves as the fall conference championship in coed dinghy racing and was the second event of the weekend for the Midshipmen. Hosted by Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va., great racing conditions allowed for close competition throughout the event.

Hindered by inconsistent starts, the Mids moved up and down the standings throughout the event before ultimately finishing seventh in the 18-team field. JC Hermus (Sr., Bellport, N.Y.) and Fiona Lobon (Sr., Chestnut Hill, Mass.) finished second in the A Division while Gray Benson (Sr., Oxford, Md.), Kimmie Leonard (Sr., Annapolis, Md.), Gavin McJones (Jr., Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Ryan Wahba (Fr., Severna Park, Md.) were 11th in the B Division.

Navy is set to return to action November 5-6 as it takes part in the ICSA Men's Singlehanded Championships hosted in Annapolis before concluding its 2021 fall season at the ICSA Match Race Championships in St. Petersburg, Fla. November 13-14.
