Ten Mids Place, Allen and Cerniglia Win Titles at Bearcat Open

Individual champions Andrew Cerniglia and Jacob Allen were among the 10 Navy wrestlers who placed at the 2021 Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open held Sunday at the Events Center in Vestal, N.Y. Navy was represented in the championship bout in four of the 10 weights classes, as Cael Crebs (174 / Fr / Montoursville, Pa.) and Hunter Johns (184 / Jr / Dayton, Ohio) placed second after facing nationally-ranked foes in the finals.

In addition to Navy's four wrestlers who competed in the championship bout of their respective weight classes, Jacob Koser (197 / Jr / Dillsburg, Pa.) took third, David Key (184 / So / Norcross, Ga.) and Shane Finney (Sr / 174 / Carlsbad, Calif.) placed fifth and Val Park (165 / Jr / Edmond, Okla.), Grady Griess (285 / So / Grand Island, Neb.) and Riley Smith (285 / Sr / Mason, Mich.) finished in the fifth/sixth-place match.

The Highlights
• Wrestlers representing 17 different institutions / clubs took part in Sunday's open.
• 16 wrestlers took the mat for the Mids with 10 placing among the top six in their respective weight classes.
• Team captain Jacob Allen won his first two matches by way of tech fall before claiming a 7-2 decision over American's Maximilian Leete in the quarters and a 6-1 decision against Hunter Adrian of Brown in the semis. Allen, ranked #32 by Intermat, found himself down 5-1 midway through the second period of the championship bout against Cornell's Greg Diakomihalis. Allen scored the final three points of the period, including a takedown with 21 seconds to go, trim the deficit to one (5-4) heading into the final frame. Allen tied it just 7 seconds into the period with an escape, however, neither wrestler was able to score over the remaining 1:53, forcing extra time. Allen was the aggressor, scoring a takedown just 11 seconds into sudden victory to earn the 7-5 victory, as well as his second-career tournament title (East Stroudsburg Open in 2019).
• 23rd-ranked Andrew Cerniglia, earned his second tournament title in as many weeks, outscoring his competition 56-13 over four matches. Cerniglia recorded three bonus-point victories before upsetting 19th-ranked Colton Yapoujian of Cornell in the finals, 7-5.
• Cael Crebs and Hunter Johns made their first-career appearance in a championship bout. Crebs earned a spot in the finals after posting a 2-1 decision over Columbia's Nick Fine in the semis, however 10th-ranked Chris Foca of Cornell claimed the title with a 14-5 major decision against Crebs.  Johns, meanwhile, pinned American's Connor Bourne in the semis before being stifled by 24th-ranked Jonathan Loew of Cornell, 10-1, in the championship.
• Val Park, Grady Griess and Riley Smith were unable to wrestle their fifth-place match due to the cap on the number of matches an individual can wrestle in a day.
