Navy freshman wrestler
Josh Koderhandt (133 / Belleville, Ill.) joined returning NCAA qualifiers
Andrew Cerniglia (157 / So / Nazareth, Pa.) and
Jacob Koser (197 / Jr / Dillsburg, Pa.) atop the podium at Sunday's season-opening Clarion Open as each of the three won the individual title at their respective weight class. Navy led the way with three champions, while Clarion had two individual winners and Lehigh, Maryland, Pitt and West Virginia accounted for four of the remaining five titles (fifth won by an unrostered wrestler).
In addition to Navy's three champions,
PJ Crane (Jr / Horsham, Pa.) took fourth at 149 pounds and
Grady Griess (So / Grand Island, Neb.) placed fifth at heavyweight.
"This is an early season event and the first test for us as a team," said second-year Navy head coach
Cary Kolat. "The day could have started better than it did, however as the day progressed we began to perform and compete better.
"The intention and focus for us was seeing what areas we need to improve upon both as a unit and individually. While we won some tight matches because we stayed focused, we also lost some due to a lack of focus. We need to be more consistent across the board in that area. We also need to be better at controlling the pace and the mat space to make quicker jumps as a team."
The Highlights
• Wrestlers representing 26 different institutions (including unattached wrestlers), along with a handful of unrostered competitors took part in Sunday's open.
• 15 wrestlers took the mat for the Mids with five placing among the top six in their respective weight classes.
• Five of the 15 wrestlers in action for Navy were making their collegiate debut -
Dayton DelViscio (125 / Fr / Media, Pa.),
Josh Koderhandt (133 / Fr / Belleville, Ill.),
Payne Carr (149 / Fr / Sturgis, Ky.),
Cael Crebs (175 / Fr / Montoursville, Pa.) and
Grady Griess (285 / So / Grand Island, Neb.) - and all five won at least one match.
• Fourth-seeded
Josh Koderhandt dominated the competition en route to winning his first-collegiate tournament title in what also was his first-collegiate tournament appearance. He outscored his opponents 22-1, including defeating David Evans of Penn State in the finals by a 10-1 major decision. Additionally, he pinned West Virginia's Garett Lautzenheiser at 3:34 in the semifinals.
• Second-seeded
Andrew Cerniglia claimed his first-collegiate tournament title after his first season was limited to duals due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Cerniglia pinned his first-two opponents in 50 seconds and 1:28 before scoring decisions over the No. 3 (8-3) and No. 4 (11-4) seeds.
• Top-seeded
Jacob Koser earned his second-career tournament title (2019-20 All-Academy Championship) by putting together a 4-0 mark and featured a 13-5 major decision over third-seeded William Feldkamp of Clarion in the finals.
