Navy Falls Short in Squash Opener Against Virginia

Nearly a year after closing out the 2019-20 season, the Navy men's squash team (0-1) returned to competition. The Mids opened the 2021 campaign on the road where they came up short in a 6-3 decision to Virginia (1-0) at the McArthur Squash Center. Navy was last in action as a team on March 1, 2020 at the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Championship. Two current members of the team - team captain Jack Lentz and Millen Randell - went on to compete the following week (March 6-8) at the CSA Individual Championship.

"While we had a solid performance today, more than anything I was incredibly happy for our players to have the opportunity to play today," said third-year Navy head coach Tyler Osborne. "We are looking forward to getting another chance to get on the court tomorrow against a talented Virginia team."

Lentz, the lone senior on the Navy squad and the team's No. 1 player, put together a strong performance en route to capturing an 11-7, 11-8, 11-9 victory over UVA's Cullen Little. It marked Lentz's 56th collegiate victory and now stands just two wins outside of the Mids' all-time top-25 wins list.

Randell, who manned the No. 3 spot, lost his opening game 11-8, but fought back to level the match at one-all with a 12-10 victory in the second. Barr pushed ahead with an 11-8 game-three victory before clinching the win in the fourth with an incredible see-saw match that ended with a 21-19 Barr win.

Meanwhile, junior Ben Korn faced a 2-0 deficit before rallying to take game three against the Cavs' Matthew Katz 11-9 at the No. 5 position. Katz, however, closed out the win by earning an 11-9 victory in the fourth.

Freshmen Charles Heath and Henry Sparkman saw their first action in a Navy uniform with Heath dropping his match at No. 4 to Andrew Braff by a combined seven points (12-10, 11-9, 11-8) and Sparkman fell short against Braff's brother, William, in three games, as well.

While officially a 6-3 win for Virginia, the Cavaliers were unable to field a full lineup and were forced to forfeit the No. 8 and No. 9 spots on the ladder.

The two teams will conclude the weekend on Sunday when they meet at 1:00 pm at the McArthur Squash Center. Live stats and a live video stream will be available via links posted on NavySports.com
