ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Team captain Katie Halbert (Keller, Texas) registered three school records as Navy track and field hosted the annual Wesley Brown Invitational over the weekend in Annapolis. Halbert set the school record in the 60m hurdles, long jump, and pentathlon.
"I have never been part of a program that someone has set three school records in the matter of five hours," Director of Navy Track and Field
Jamie Cook said after the meet. "As a captain and in regards to leadership, you can't say enough about and the way she was able to come out and compete and do things as well as she did. I am really happy for her and the hard work she has put in."
Halbert set her school records on Friday night of competition as part of the multi-events. The Keller, Texas native opened up the meet with a school-record performance of 8.66 in the 60m hurdles. With her first attempt in the long jump, she registered a distance of 5.98m (19-07.50) to best the previous record by 0.05m. In the fifth and final event of the pentathlon, Halbert tallied 707 points to give her the victory in the multi-event and tie the Navy school-record 3,709 total points.
Erin Higgins (Ashburn, Va.) finished the pentathlon with 3,691 points, which ranks third in Navy history. Annie Taylor (Nashville, Tenn.), who set the Navy record in the pentathlon last season, finished third with 3,520 points to once again add her name to the Navy top 10 (seventh).
On the men's side,
Baynes Autrey (Mountain Brook, Ala.) tallied 5,332 points in the heptathlon to finish second at the meet behind Princeton's Andrei Iosivas, who registered 5,715 points. Autrey's performance was the third best in Navy history and his total and performance in the 60m hurdles were both IC4A qualifiers.
"We had some good people competing here," Cook added. "Princeton came in, and their coach is a former Olympian in the decathlon and someone who I have always looked up to as a mentor in a way. To have him come here and have his athlete qualify for nationals and our athletes do well with a few PRs. It is just fun to have the multis here. It gives those athletes a chance to show what their specialty is and not just at the conference level, but an early season meet."
