Navy Squash to Close out First Half of the Season in Maine

The 25th-ranked Navy squash team (13-1) will close out the calendar year when it travels to the state of Maine for a trio of matches this weekend. The Mids, who are riding an eight-match winning streak, kick off the weekend with a 5:30 pm match Friday against #22 Bates (1-1) at the Bates Squash Center. Navy faces #20 Colby (1-2) on Saturday at the Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center beginning at 2:00 pm before closing out the weekend with an 11:00 am bout against Bowdoin (1-1) at the Lubin Squash Center

Last Time Out
• The Mids were last in action Nov. 18 and 19, defeating 32nd-ranked Connecticut College 8-1 and #27 Wesleyan 7-2.
• It was the first meeting against Connecticut College since 2013.
• Navy is now 14-0 against the Camels.
• Outside of Navy's 3-0 loss at the #9 position, the Mids lost just one game in their other eight matches. Henry Sparkman (Jr / Darien, Conn.) dropped an 11-7 decision in the opening game at #3 against Henry Pelletier before rallying to win the final three, including the fourth game by a 12-10 count.

• Navy improved to 28-1 all-time against Wesleyan.
• The Mid' losses came at the #8 and #9 spots on the ladder.
• While Navy won the other seven matches, the Cardinals pushed four of the seven to four games.
• For a second time in as many days, Sparkman needed four games to close out his match at #3. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, John Sutherby claimed game three 11-6, before Sparkman took the deciding game 11-7.
• Toby Goldston earned an 11-9 victory over Tommy Rankin (Sr / Atlanta, Ga.) at #5. Rankin, however, rallied to win three in a row, including a 12-10 decision in game four to earn the win.
• Alexander Orr (Fr / Haverford, Pa.) and Ethan Yan traded victories in the first two games before Orr secured his 11th win of the season with mirroring 11-9 wins in games three and four
• Tighe Mullarkey (Locust Valley, N.Y.) also collected his 11th win of his rookie campaign with a 3-1 victory over Jack Lungstrum at #7. Mullarkey jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Lungstrum extended the match with an 11-9 win in the third. Mullarkey capped the win in the fourth behind an 11-7 decision.

About the Opponents
• Navy heads into the weekend with winning records against all three teams and series where the Mids have played at minimum of 20 times.
• The most evenly-matched series this weekend is that between Navy and Bates. The Mids own a narrow 15-13 lead, including a 4-0 mark in matches played at Bates.
• Each of the last two meetings between the two programs were at the College Squash Association Team Championship where the two exchanged victories - 7-2 Navy win in 2017 and 5-4 Bates win in 2020.
• The last time the two met during the regular season was in January of 2016 when the Mids grabbed a 5-4 victory in a neutral site match.
• The last time Navy played at Bates was on Jan. 7, 2012, where the Mids earned a 7-2 win.
• The Mids have won 23 of their 24 matches against Colby, but will meet the Mules for just the second time on their home court. Twenty-three of the 24 matches between the two schools have been played at a neutral site.
• The last time the two programs met was on Jan. 26, 2014, in a match the Mids won 9-0, while the only previous meeting at Colby was Jan. 7, 2012, when Navy captured an 8-1 victory.
• Navy holds a 32-10 series advantage over Bowdoin, including a 4-0 mark in matches played on the Polar Bears' home court (9-0 in 1971 / 9-0 in 1972 / 9-0 in 1991 / 9-0 in 2012). Bowdoin, however, snapped Navy's five-match winning streak in the series a year ago with a 6-3 victory in Annapolis.

What's Ahead
• Navy will be off the rest of the month to focus on final exams and observe the holiday break.
• The Mids will return to action Jan. 6 when it plays host to #23 Middlebury (5:00 pm) at the Prager Family Squash Facility in Annapolis. The first of three matches that weekend, Navy will also play host to #14 Williams (Jan. 7, 2:00 pm) and #18 Amherst (Jan. 8, 1:00 pm)
