ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team continued its winning ways to open the spring portion of its 2021-22 season over the weekend, winning the St. Mary's Team Race. The Midshipmen have now won three of the four races they have competed in this spring.
 
After seeing competition be canceled on Saturday due to inclement weather, the Mids returned to action on Sunday for one full round robin to that would decide the winner amongst the nine participants.
 
Navy jumped out to an early lead to begin Sunday's competition, but lost two of the final three races to fall into a three-way tie for first at 6-2 with Penn and Roger Williams. The tie resulted in a three-way sail off that served as the tiebreaker.
 
In the tiebreaker races, the Mids were able to pick up a pair of victories that sealed the overall win. Leading the way for the victorious Midshipmen were skippers Gray Benson, Olivia de Olazarra and JC Hermus, along with crews Kimmie Leonard, Fiona Lobon, Jonah Hatt and Ryan Wahba.
 
Navy was also slated to host the Jen Harris Spring Team Race in Annapolis over the weekend, but saw the event fall one race short on being an official event due to weather delays and course changes.
 
UP NEXT
Following its third victory in the last four races, Navy will return to action this coming weekend as it hosts the Graham Hall Team Race, along with traveling to take part in the Kings Point Team Race and the Washington College Team Race.
