WILLIAMSBURG, Va. //Â
Chip Deegan (Fr / Newport Beach, Calif.) shot a 1-under par 70 in the final round of the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate to clinch individual medalist honors for the first time in his career, while the Navy men's golf team finished in a tie for fourth alongside Longwood.
Despite closing out the first day of competition by shooting the low round (281, -3), the Mids were unable to roll that momentum into the final 18 holes. Navy shot a 13-over par 297 on Tuesday, sliding from second to fourth (295-281-297=873) in the final standings. Meanwhile, Villanova (289-293-286=868) turned in the low round on Tuesday (286, +2) to make the jump from eighth to first, clipping second-place George Washington (286-293-291=870) by 2 strokes in the 13-team tournament. Princeton (288-290-294=872) placed third, followed by Navy and Longwood (289-289-295=873) in fourth.
Deegan, who led the tournament with 17 birdies in the three rounds, began the day atop the leader board holding a 2-stroke lead over Fairleigh Dickinson's Pyae Phyo Thu. While as a team Navy's scores slid in the final round, Deegan was able to complete the final 18 holes under par with a 70 (-1) and gained a stroke in the final standings over Thu, who shot par. Deegan was 2-under after the first 9, but back-to-back bogeys on the back 9 (12, 13) brought him even. His birdie on the 17th allowed him to finish under for the day and the tournament (72-65-70=207, -6). Thu and teammate Jaime Julve placed second and third, respectively at 3- and 2-under.
Navy's
Jack Tarzy (Fr / Medford, N.J.) finished just a stroke outside of the top 20 with his 54-hole mark of 219 (73-72-75), while
Keegan Shreves (Sr / Potomac, Md.) placed 28th with an 8-over par 221 (73-71-77).Â
Benjamin Valdez (So / Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) took 49th with a 15-over par 228 (77-74-77), while
Owen Huntington (So / Camas, Wash.), who improved his score in each round, finished 74th with a 26-over par 239 (85-79-75).
Braxton Tracy (Sr / Huntersville, N.C.), who competed as an individual, placed 53rd with a 16-over par 229 (80-75-74). Like Huntington, Tracy improved each round and shot a 3-over par 74 in Tuesday's final round, the team's second-lowest score of the day.
Navy will be back in action next Monday, April 3 at the Columbia Spring Invitational played at the Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa.
