Track and Field Concludes Final Tune-Up Before Outdoor Star Meet

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy track and field teams will head into Outdoor Star Meet on a high note thanks to a terrific outing at the Navy Outdoor Invitational on Saturday at Ingram Field in Annapolis, Md. The meet did not have team scoring.

The Mids won 24 events in their first home meet of the outdoor season. Additionally, Navy totaled 33 IC4A / ECAC qualifying times / marks.

Prior to Saturday's meet, Murphy Smith set a new school record in the 10,000m at the Raleigh Relays on Thursday in Raleigh, N.C. The junior posted a time of 28:37.01 to beat the previous record by 23.79, which was set in 1997 by John Mentzer (29:00.80). Smith placed ninth overall in a field of 108 athletes.

Additional top-10 times in Raleigh were recorded by Alexander Kirkland and Justin Mumford. Kirkland ran the fourth-fastest 10,000m in school history (29:11.54) to finish in 38th place. Mumford placed 54th out of 198 runners in the 5,000m by clocking in the eighth-best time in team history at 13:59.29.

"Today was another great meet. The team put on a good show for a great crowd in our first home meet of the outdoor season. We got to work on some field and sprint events we hadn't competed in recently. It was really good to see our middle-distance and distance runners continue to click and take another step forward," said Director of Track and Field / Cross Country Jamie Cook. "Murphy Smith had a huge 10k race on Thursday to set a new school record. It wasn't only him, however. Alexander Kirkland and Justin Mumford also competed in North Carolina and both of them had great performances to set top-10 times. We sent those guys down there to get better competitive opportunities and they're really progressing well.

"It was great to have the team together as a whole for the first time since Patriot League Indoors. It's always fun to see the different event groups cheer each other on. We had a lot of family support today as well and that really helped drive some kids to continue to make a name for themselves. Going forward we're going to continue to get some strength work in and see where we stand as we head into Army next week."

Brahmir Vick recorded the lone top-10 time at the Navy Outdoor Invitational. He posted the third-fastest 110m hurdles time (13.73) in program history to win the race.
