ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America recently announced its academic awards for the 2024 spring semester. The Navy women's team earned recognition as a Scholar All-America team and four Mids ––
Riley Gavigan,
Ela Habjan,
Ben Irwin and
Richie Trentalange –– garnered Second-Team Scholar All-America honors.
Teams needed to attain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.00 during the spring semester to earn the accolade. The Navy women's team combined for a 3.36 GPA during the grading period. The program has received the laurel in each semester since the spring of 2018 (13 semesters in a row).
Individuals needed to post a GPA of at least 3.50 during the spring term and also attain an NCAA Championship A or B cut effort to receive Scholar-All-America honors. Swimmers and divers who met the grade-point average and competed at the NCAA Championship received first-team accolades, while those who reached the academic standard and were not selected for the NCAA Championship garnered second-team laurels.
This is the first time each of the four Mids earned the individual honor.
Gavigan, who was a member of Navy's Class of 2024, ended her academic career with a 3.74 GPA this spring. The quantitative economics major posted an NCAA B cut time in the 100 breaststroke.
Habjan, the 2024 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, attained B cut times in both backstroke events. She compiled a 3.71 GPA and will start her sophomore year this fall as an operations research major.
Like Habjan, Irwin earned the league's rookie-of-the-year honor this season. He attained B cut times in both backstroke events and in the 200 fly, and would go on to reach the semifinal round in the 200 backstroke at the 2024 US Swimming Olympic Team Trials. Academically, Irwin posted a 3.64 GPA this spring and will begin classes as an operations research major this fall.
Trentalange closed his four years on The Yard with a 3.96 GPA as a quantitative economics major. He met this year's NCAA B cut standard in the 100 breaststroke event. Additionally, Trentalange was the recipient of the 2024 Men's Calvert Coaches' Award.
