ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy men's and women's track and field teams posted a solid showing on Saturday afternoon in the first home outdoor meet of the season as the Mids hosted the Navy Outdoor Invitational at Ingram Field.
The Midshipmen won 23 events in the final tune-up before the annual Army-Navy Outdoor Star Meet next weekend.
Before Saturday's meet
Murphy Smith set a school record in the 10,000m at the Raleigh Relays on Thursday in Raleigh, N.C. The senior from Charlotte, N.C., posted a 28:23.81 to beat the previous record by 13.20, which he set last season (28:37.01) in the same meet.
Jackson Nguyen ran the fourth fastest mark in school history (29:06.68) in the same race.

Jamie Cook. "As far as today, it's always good to perform in front of a home crowd. Our goal was to come out and compete, and overall, I think we did a good job of that."
Jacques Guillaume set a school record while winning the 400m hurdles in a time of 50.76, besting the previous record of 50.79 that he set last year.
The men's 4x100m relay team of
Marcel Jackson,
Nathan Kent,
Jonah Johnson and
Tyler Yurich ran the fifth-fastest time (40.19) in program history while finishing first.
William Driscoll kicked off the meet by winning the men's 3,000m steeplechase in a time of 9:29.85.
Sophomore Susanna Henderson got the meet started on the right foot for the women's team in the 3,000m steeplechase as she won the race in a career-best time of 11:50.57.
Annie Lemelin won the women's 100m and 400m hurdles in the same meet for the first time in her career. She recorded a time of 14.09 seconds in the 100m hurdles and achieved a season-best of 1:02.15 in the 400m hurdles.
Justice Hood won the men's 110m hurdles for the first time in his career, recording a personal best time of 15.21, edging
Logan Howe, who finished second in a time of 15.25.
Tyler Yurich continued his impressive spring by winning the 100m (10.55) sprints for the third straight meet.
It was a photo finish for Navy in the men's 200m dash as
Jay Evans and
Simon Alexander posted identical times of 21.62. Evans' 21.617 earned him the victory over Alexander's 21.620.
Junior Samantha Woodworth clocked a personal best in the 1,500m with a winning time of 4:33.28 for her first victory this spring.
The Mids dominated the men's 800m run with eight runners placing first through eighth, led by William Gravitt, who won in a time of 1:51.54.
A trio of Midshipmen claimed the top three spots in the 5,000m. Sophomore
Logan Flament led the group with a career-best 14:36.94. Nicholas Valdivieso (14:55.39) and Max Giardet (15:19.39) followed to round out the top three.
In the final track event of the meet, the men's team placed first in the 4x400m relay. The quartet of
Nick Hamby,
Justin Hom,
Matthew Quispe, and
Jack Lange posted a 3:22.81. It was a tight finish as Lange squeaked by
Mason Wokoma from Navy's second relay team (3:22.87) to secure the victory.
Navy's dominance continued in the field events as the women's team won the pole vault, triple jump, shot put, hammer throw, javelin and discus. The men's team finished first in the triple jump, shot put, discus and javelin.
Jordynn Hutchinson finished first in three events in the same meet for the second time this spring. She won the shot put (14.06m / 46' 1.5"), hammer throw (50.55m / 165' 10") and the discus (43.90m / 144' 0").
Helen Emerick and Aurora Cieslukowski shared the pole vault crown along with Mount St. Mary's Julia Kirschnick. All three athletes recorded a height of 3.80m (12' 5.5")
Samantha Bollinger won the triple jump for the second time this season with a leap of 11.90m (39' 0.5").
Renny Murphy's second throw in the javelin (47.09) was enough to win her second event of the spring.
Sophomore
Adam Szatanek had a career day, throwing a personal-best 15.07m (49' 5.5") to win the shot put. He also tossed a career-best hammer throw mark (52.24m / 171' 5") to claim third. The Huntingtown, Md., native closed out his day placing third in the discus with a throw of 43.39m (142' 4").
Sebasteon Allen won the triple jump event for the first time this season with a distance of 14.31m (46' 11.5").
Navy claimed first, second and third place in the javelin. Freshman
Nicholas Barra made his collegiate debut with an impressive throw of 53.60m (175' 10") on his final attempt of the day for the top spot.
Ethan DeLaurier (50.03m / 175' 10") and
Nick Simmons (49.42m / 162' 2") recorded career-best marks to finish second and third, respectively.
The meet closed out with a strong performance in the discus throw by
Max Rubin, who won the event at 46.58m (152' 10").
"I like what we have going, we just have to continue getting better. I hope we can get a large crowd out to support us next weekend against Army," remarked Cook.
