Track and Field Has Solid All-Around Performance at JMU Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy track and field teams won 10 events in the JMU Invitational held on Saturday in Harrisonburg, Va.

There was no team scoring in the meet which included George Washington, Hampton, James Madison, Loyola, Marshall, Mount St. Mary's, Navy, Radford, Towson and UMBC.

"We were able to get a lot accomplished today despite the weather conditions. There was success on the field and on the track. It was nice to see athletes get a chance to compete that normally don't get to showcase their skills.  We are happy with the effort that was given today," said Director of Track and Field Jamie Cook.

Jordynn Hutchinson began the meet with a victory in the hammer throw with a distance of 49.55m (162' 6"). Nalina Smith finished in second place in the event with a toss of 47.36m (155' 4").

Hutchinson also placed third in the shot put with a throw of 13.08m (42' 11").

Ethan DeLaurier led Navy in the javelin with a career-best 56.24m (184' 6") to win the event for the first time in his career. Malachi Cummings finished in second place with a toss of 56.13m and Nicholas Barra placed fourth with a 51.33m (168' 5") effort.

Freshman Emma Miller won her first collegiate event in the javelin with a season-best 40.46m (132' 9"). Layne Rivera took second place with a toss of 38.09m (124' 11") and Kiera Sleiman rounded out the top-three throwers with a season-best 36.78m (120' 8").

Tyler Yurich continued his dominance in the 100m this season by winning the event for the fifth-consecutive meet with a time of 10.51. Marcel Jackson finished just behind Yurich in 10.58 to take second place.

The Mids' success in the sprints carried over into the 200m where Nathan Kent won the event for the third time this spring.  His effort tied the program's eighth-fastest time of 21.02. Yurich clocked in with a career-best time of 21.32 to finish in second place.

Navy had the three best marks in the pole vault led by Gunnar Kimball's season-best 4.90m (16' 0.75") to win the event. Teammates Cooper Wakley and Gavin Anderson finished with an identical height of 4.50m (14' 9").

Joe Hurt won the triple jump for the first time this spring with a distance of 14.40m (47' 3"). Gary Choice claimed third place in the event with his season-best mark of 14.18m (46' 6.25").

Freshman Wyatt Shaw won the high jump for the second time this season with a height of 1.95m (6' 4.75").

William Gravitt posted Navy's top time in the 800m to win the event in 1:50.80. Carson Sloat finished in second place with a time of 1:52.68 and Colter Kirkland clocked a season-best 1:54.33 in the race to take fourth place.

Freshman Madeline Palmisciano won her first collegiate event in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 11:09.28. Susanna Henderson set a personal-best mark of 11:34.03 to place third in the event.

Katelyn Pepin set a personal-best time of 2:14.09 in the women's 800m to finish in third place.

Senior team captain Kylie Bedard paced the Mids in the 400m with a time of 56.81 to finish in fourth place. Sophia Richter posted a season-best time of 57.36 to place sixth.

Pete deJonge led the way for the Mids in the men's 400m with a second-place finish in 48.96.

Adam Szatanek led all Midshipmen in the hammer throw and shot put as he finished in second and third place, respectively. He opened his day with a 51.26m (168' 2") mark in the hammer throw followed by a 15.04m (49' 4.25") in the shot put.

Gracie Emerick placed second in the pole vault with a height of 3.80m (12' 5.50"). Emerick has placed among the top-two finishers in the pole vault in her last four meets.

The men's 4x100m relay team of Fabian France, Simon Alexander, David Walker and Wakley finished in second place in 41.56.

Freshman Dane Eike had his best placement in the 1500m this season with a second-place time of 3:53.60.

The Mids will play host to the Navy Spring Invitational next Friday and Saturday at Ingram Field in Annapolis, Md. Navy will also send athletes to compete in the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., on Friday and Saturday.
