WILLIAMSBURG, Va. // Team captain
Jack Tarzy (Medford, N.J.) turned in a 5-under par 208 to secure a share of individual medalist honors for the fourth time this season, while classmate
Chip Deegan (Newport Beach, Calif.) finished a stroke behind in third to lead the Navy men's golf team to a third-place finish at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. As a team, the Mids shot a 15-over par 867 (282-288-297).
Tarzy and Deegan were among the leaders from the beginning, as Deegan shot a 5-under par 66 in the opening round to hold the early advantage on the leader board. Tarzy, who was within striking distance of his teammate after posting a 3-under par in the morning round, came back to shoot 3-under in the afternoon and made his way to the top of the leader board. Deegan put forth a terrific effort in the final round with a 3-under par 68 to finish the tournament 4-under, but Tarzy held on for his fourth-collegiate victory. Tarzy, whose 5-under par 208 is tied as the sixth-lowest score in school history, shared individual medalist honors with Villanova's Matt Zerfass, who used a 4-under par in the final round to make the leap from sixth to a tie for first.
Tarzy won three-consecutive tournaments during the fall campaign, taking medalist honors at The Goat, the Commander-In-Chief's Cup and the Nassau Intercollegiate. The four wins by Tarzy this year are the most by a Navy golfer in a season since Billy Hurley won 6 tournaments his senior year in 2003-04.
Danny Auffant (Jr / Bellevue, Wash.) earned a 20th-place finish with a 4-over par 217 that included a 2-under par second round.
Kaden Ausen (So / Puyallup, Wash.) tied for 66th with a 22-over par 235 (77-76-82), while
James Devore (So / Porter, Texas) placed 71st with a 23-over par 236 (75-79-82).
Sebastian Alonzo (Fr / Azusa, Calif.), who played as an individual, posted a 16-over par 229 (77-74-78) to finish in 53rd.
Tarzy, Deegan and Auffant all had eagles in the competition. Ironically, all three made eagle on the same hole, just in different rounds - Auffant in the first, Tarzy in the second and Deegan in the third.
Navy was one of just two teams to finish a round under par. The Mids turned in a 2-under par 282 to open the tournament, while their second-round mark of 4-over par 288 was the second lowest among the field in the round. The 2-under par 282 tied as the 12th-lowest 18-hole mark (vs. par) in school history, meanwhile its 2-over par 570 after two rounds tied as the 3rd-best mark in program history. The 18-over par 867 tied as the 11th-lowest mark in Navy history.
