ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Navy director of track & field and cross country Jamie Cook announced today that Chris Johnson has been promoted to associate head coach for the track & field program.
Â
"Chris has proven himself as one of the top young coaches in the country," Cook said. "His ability to recruit, teach and mentor young men and women has been outstanding. His event group [high jump and multis] has dominated the Patriot League since the 2022 season. This promotion is well-deserved."
Â
Johnson has found extensive success during his five seasons at Navy, leading the program's high jumpers and multi-event athletes. During his tenure, he has coached 10 NCAA East First Round qualifiers, 25 Patriot League champions and 62 Patriot League medalists. Johnson has helped Navy to 19 Star Meet victories and 16 Patriot League team titles since his arrival in the 2021-22 season.
Â
Most recently, Johnson was selected as a member of the athletics (track and field) coaching staff for Team USA at the FISU America Games in Lima, Peru. He worked with the combined-event athletes, which included Midshipman
Nick Simmons, helping lead the group to seven overall medals (three gold, three silver and one bronze).
Â
"I would like to thank Coach Cook,
Kris Pierce and Michael Kelly for the promotion and their support," Johnson said. "I am humbled by the opportunity and it's a blessing to be a part of the athletics department as we look ahead to the future. I will continue to channel my passion and energy toward building on our tradition of success as a program."
