Navy Women's Swimming Completes Undefeated Regular Season

Jan. 24, 2009

Final Stats

PHILADELPHIA - Led by the standout junior trio of Tara Chapmon (Virginia Beach, Va.), Mallory Dietrich (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Thuy-Mi Dinh (Anaheim, Calif.), the Navy women's swimming team (14-0) posted a pair of wins over Penn and Rider to put the finishing touches on the program's first undefeated dual meet season.

The Mids edged the host Quakers, 159-141, and cruised past Rider, 190-110, to conclude the 2008-09 regular season with the best dual record in school history at a perfect 14-0.

The 14 victories tops the previous Navy single-season record of 13, a mark which the Mids have met twice previously during the 1987-88 and 2007-08 regular seasons.

"From top-to-bottom, today was just a great all-around meet for us," said Navy head coach John Morrison. "The team really pulled it together to ensure that we remained unbeaten and to make this year one of our most successful seasons in school history."

Dietrich led the way for the Mids with three individual victories and a hand in the team's winning 200-medley relay effort. She set a Sheerr Pool record in winning the 100-breaststroke in a time of 1:04.22, while also claiming victory in the 200-breast (2:20.14) as well as the 100-butterfly (57.09).

In the 200 medley relay, Dietrich, Dinh, senior Jennie Spencer (Smithburg, W. Va.) and sophomore Brooke Besche (Severna Park, Md.) combined to produce a winning clocking of 1:48.29.

Chapmon was also a three-event winner on Saturday afternoon, sweeping the 500-freestyle (5:00.45) and 1000-freestyle (10:18.46) events, as well as the 200 backstroke (2:02.93).

Dinh rounded out Navy's trio of multiple-event winners with her pair of victories in the 50-free (23.41) and 100-free (52.50). Sophomore Allison Ranzau (Alpharetta, Ga.) also landed in the winner's circle for Navy, taking the 200-free with a time of 1:52.87.

"We wanted to go out and try to do something special this season - and I think we have done that as the first Navy team to finish undefeated," added Morrison. "We're real excited about that accomplishment and we're hoping to build off that momentum moving forward as we approach the Patriot League Championship."

The Midshipmen women will next compete Saturday, January 31 at the Bucknell Invitational.
