ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After trailing by two points following the smallbore portion of the match, Navy (2-0) rallied in air rifle and fired a 2,360 in the discipline to upend North Carolina State (0-1) in a 4,670-4,665 decision at the
Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
Â
For the second-straight week,
Michael Zanti (Jr., Norfolk, Va.) paced the Midshipmen to the victory as he finished just a point shy of his career-bests in smallbore and air rifle, which he set last week, en route to an aggregate score of 1,178 points to lead all competitors.
"We are very happy with our team's performance today," head coach
Mike Anti said. "North Carolina State always has a very good team with a number of talented athletes, so a win against them means our athletes are moving in the right direction. We were actually behind NC State by two points going into air rifle but our athletes finished strong to get the win.
Michael Zanti had another outstanding performance today, backing up his performance last week.
Mark Amdahl also had another great day followed closely by
Gabriella Mayes and
Torrance Kang. In addition, a number of our athletes had personal best scores."
Â
In smallbore, Zanti finished second in the field with a total of 583 in the event, which was highlighted by a perfect 20-shot prone segment.
Mark Amdahl (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) finished smallbore with a total of 579 and
Gabriella Mayes (Jr., Rio Rancho, N.M.) was just behind with a 576. Making her season debut, senior captain
Torrance Kang (Columbia, Md.) accounted for Navy's final counting score in the discipline with a 572.
Â
The Midshipmen's total of 2,310 points in smallbore was just behind the Wolfpack's 2,312 points. Addy Burrow led the field with a 584 and Makenzie Sheffield scored 582 points.
Â
Shifting into air rifle, Zanti's field-leading 595 in the event sparked Navy's come-from-behind win as two of Navy's counting scores were matched by North Carolina State's starters. Amdahl finished a 593 and Kang recorded a 587. Both scores were countered by Burrow and Katie Torrence, respectively. Mayes notched the final counting score for the Midshipmen with a 585, which bested Sheffield's 584. The last score for the Wolfpack was a 589 from Travis Stockton as Navy outscored North Carolina State by seven points in air rifle en route to the win.
Â
All three of the Midshipmen's scores on Saturday set new season-highs, while their 2,360 in air rifle was two points shy of moving into a tie for fourth all-time in program history. Zanti now has two air rifle scores within the program's top-four highest scores.
Â
Navy is currently slated to return to action on Saturday, November 21 against Kentucky in Annapolis.
