Intercollegiate Sailing Wins Intrepid Trophy

The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in two events over the weekend, highlighted by winning the MAISA Match Racing Championship for the Intrepid Trophy.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in two events over the weekend, highlighted by winning the MAISA Match Racing Championship for the Intrepid Trophy.

The Mids competed against a field of seven teams, all of which were vying for a berth at the Match Race Nationals in St. Petersburg, Fla. In November. The event was sailed in Navy's fleet of Colgate 26 sailboats with a crew of four.

The Midshipmen squad of JC Hermus (Sr., Bellport, N.Y.), Gray Benson (Sr., Oxford, Md.), Kimmie Leonard (Sr., Annapolis, Md.) and Jack Carminati (Sr., Youngstown, N.Y.) posted a perfect 4-0 record on the first day of the event to set Navy in prime position for Sunday.

In what proved to be some very tight races to start the day, the Mids prevailed and finished the round robin stage with a perfect 6-0 mark. Navy drew Kings Point in the semifinal round and came away with a 2-0 victory, leading both races from start to finish.

In the finals against Georgetown, the racing once against proved to be a close match with leads being exchanged throughout the contest. However, Navy was able to prevail yet again, defeating the Hoyas, 2-0, to claim the Intrepid Trophy and an automatic berth at the national championships.

In its second competition of the weekend, Navy took part in the MAISA Coed/Women's Combined Regatta hosted by Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y. with nine teams competing in two simultaneous competitions.

Navy battled difficult conditions throughout the event, finishing ninth in the women's fleet with Evie Blauvelt (Fr., Marietta, Ga.) and Faith Southwick (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.) finishing 14th in the combined division. Additionally, Carlyn Blauvelt (Jr., Marietta, Ga.) and Madeline Smith (So., Nokomis, Fla.) were 17th in that same division.

In the coed division, the Midshipmen finished in sixth place after Olivia de Olazarra (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and Ryan Wahba (Fr., Severna Park, Md.) tallied an eighth-place mark overall while Gavin McJones (Jr., Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Fiona Lobon (Sr., Chestnut Hill, Mass.) were 14th.

Navy will return to action October 2-3 with four events including the Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men's Singlehandeds, the Danmark Trophy, the Tom Curtis Regatta and the first round of the Women's Atlantic Coast Championships.
