The Navy wrestling team (5-5, 3-4 EIWA) earned its second win at home over the last three days behind a 33-8 victory over Clarion (8-6, 4-4 MAC) Sunday afternoon at Dahlgren Hall. Navy won seven bouts overall and received an added boost in the scoring column with four bonus-point victories including three wins by fall.
Clarion took its lone lead in the dual when junior Seth Kolena went the distance against Navy's
Tyler Hunt (So / 141 / Calhoun, Ga.) and went on to take the day's first bout (10-8) 23 seconds into sudden victory.
Navy answered by not only winning the next three matches, each of the three saw the Mids earn the full six points. Senior
Jonathan Miranda (141 / Poway, Calif.) kicked the streak off with his third-career dual win, pinning John Altieri at 4:17.
Andrew Cerniglia (So / 157 / Nazareth, Pa.), meanwhile, won his second-consecutive dual by fall, pinning Kyle Schickel at 2:56. The final run of bonus point wins came at 165 where Navy's
Val Park (Jr / Edmond, Okla.) and Cam Pine were locked up midway through the opening period when Pine suffered an injury that would keep him from finishing the match.
Navy's 15-point advantage (18-3) would grow to 25 by the end of the dual, as Navy went on to capture wins in four of the final six bouts. Among the wins was a spectacular performance by 27th-ranked
Jacob Koser (Jr / 197 / Dillsburg, Pa.), who trailed Clarion's Will Feldkamp, a standout performer who came into the dual with a 17-2 overall record and 10-1 mark in dual action, by as many as six points and a 9-4 count at the end of the opening period. Koser inched closer in the second, cutting the deficit to four points (11-7). The third period saw Koser dominate, earning the takedown less than 20 seconds into the frame, followed by a two-point nearfall and a four-point nearfall with under 20 seconds remaining. Koser secured the bonus point for riding time to capture a 16-11 victory and seal the team win for the Mids
Newcomer
Josh Koderhandt (Fr / 133 / Belleville, Ill.), meanwhile, built a 10-3 advantage against Alex Blake in the final bout of the day before earning the win by fall at 4:51.
