Men’s Track and Field Posts Largest Point Total In Indoor Star Win Over Army

The Mids set an indoor star series record with 113 points scored.

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Navy men's track and field team (2-0) scored the most points in the Army-Navy Indoor Star Meet, which is part of the overall Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA, defeating Army (0-1) 113-68 on Saturday in West Point, N.Y. Navy claimed first in 13 of the 17 events and earned maximum points in seven to post its largest margin of victory over Army since 1992. With the win, the Mids improve to 35-27-2 all-time in the indoor series versus the Black Knights and claim the star for the fourth straight year.

Along with the wins by the women's track and field, rifle and gymnastics teams, Navy went 4-0 in star competitions on Saturday to improve to 8-6 in star competitions and 12-8 against Army overall.

"We had a good start to the meet. Joshua Boamah winning the weight throw was awesome to see. We took care of business in the men's long jump and that helped set the tone for the rest of the meet," said director of track and field/cross country Jamie Cook. "I'm proud of this team's progress and the coaching staff for the work they've put in. Our goal is to go out there and execute, control what we can control and that's our effort and attitude. When you win by this much on both sides in a meet that's designed to be close, it shows how everyone contributed and that's what we talk about by focusing on the team component. Overall, a lot of key performances from young athletes from both teams and great leadership. The Naval Academy should be proud of their effort today."

Navy jumped up on Army right away thanks to a pair of victories in the throw events from Joshua Boamah. The junior recorded the fourth-best distance in Navy history in the shot put at 18.33m (60' 1.75") and the fifth-best distance in the weight throw at 20.11m (65' 11.75").

Navy also dominated the jump events, claiming maximum points in all three events. Aidan Featherby won the long jump with a distance of 7.17m (23' 6.25"), while Caden Dailey took second with a jump of 7.15m (23' 5.5"). Jordan Payne won the triple jump with a distance of 14.51m (47' 7.25") and Sebasteon Allen recorded a mark of 14.40m (47' 3") to finish second. In the high jump, Benjemen Schneider claimed first with a height of 2.10m (6' 10") and Preston Wilson placed second with a mark of 2.05m (6' 8.75").

The field events concluded with a win by Jack Haller in the pole vault with a height of 5.06m (16' 7.25").

The track events began with the one-mile and Alex Rizzo won the event for Navy with a time of 4:06.92. The duo of Brahmir Vick and Baynes Autrey then scored eight points in the 60m hurdles. Vick took first in 7.97 seconds, while Autrey finished second in 8.08 seconds.

Navy also swept the 400m with Jacques Guillaume placing first with a time of 48.70 seconds and Nathan Kent taking second with a time of 49.46 seconds. Navy then claimed seven points in the 500m thanks to a victory from Jonathan Simmons with a time of 1:05.09.

Jonah Johnson and Sethan Hollier gave the Mids max points by taking the top two spots in the 60m dash. Johnson won the event with a time of 6.96 seconds and Hollier finished .02 seconds behind to take second.

Army managed to earn wins in the 800m and 1,000m but Navy answered by taking the 200m and 3,000m. Guillaume won the 200m for his second win of the meet with a time of 21.90 seconds and Sam Keeny won the 3,000m, setting a Gillis Field House record with a time of 8:10.07.

Navy continues the indoor season with the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational, hosted by Liberty next Friday and Saturday. The meet begins at 1:30 p.m. on Friday with the men's 60m hurdle prelims and continues Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the women's high jump.
