"Joshua Boamah winning the weight throw was amazing. The energy in the building and the momentum he built for his teammates was a great sight to see," said Director of Track and Field / Cross Country Jamie Cook. "Huge credit to Collin (Greene) for taking second and Dane (Vernor) getting fifth in the event. Those three scored 22 of our points today and that event was a major momentum shifter for us.

"Very happy with the number of athletes we qualified for the finals in the track events. Murphy's (Smith) victory in the 5,000m along with Justin's (Mumford) and Alexander's (Kirkland) finishes in the event helped us score key points. A performance early in the day that was a big boost for our team was Walker Rudisaile in the pole vault. He woke up not feeling great, but still found a way to come out on top."

Day One Recap
The story of the first day was Joshua Boamah. Navy's indoor captain broke the program and meet record in the weight throw with a winning mark of 21.91m (71' 10.75") to score 10 points. He broke his own team record by 0.79m, which he posted at the Army-Navy Indoor Star Meet earlier this season. Boamah's distance shattered the championship record by 0.38m. Army's Cameron Smith set the previous meet record at last year's championship.
Collin Greene (19.88m / 65' 2.75") beat out Smith for second place in the weight throw by .40m to contribute eight points. Dane Vernor added four points to the team score with a fifth-place effort of 18.45m (60' 6.5").

Walker Rudisaile won his second indoor gold medal for a first-place finish in the pole vault. He posted a winning height of 5.15m (16' 10.75") to score 10 points. Gunnar Kimball (4.5 points) also scored in the event by finishing in a tie for fourth place with a mark of 4.75m (15' 7").

The remainder of the track events were qualifying races for the finals on Sunday.

Jay Evans also qualified for the 60m finals. He placed eighth in the race with a time of 6.95. Additionally, Evans qualified for the 200m finals thanks to a fifth-place finish at 21.69.

Both Nathan Kent and Jacques Guillaume qualified for the 200m and 400m finals. Kent crossed the finish line in 21.28 to place first in the 200m. His time is in a tie for seventh in Navy history. "Everything at the end of the day is for the team. We are trying to qualify as many athletes as we can and score points," added Cook. "Although everyone has their individual goals, the entire group is focused most on what the team goal is and that's winning the meet. The big thing going into tomorrow is conserving our energy. We feel good on both sides, but tomorrow is the real day and we need to be ready to go on all levels."
