Track and Field Concludes Final Meet Before League Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –  The Navy track and field teams played host to the Navy Select on Friday at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in the program's final competition before next week's the Patriot League Indoor Championship.

"There were a lot of event wins today, which is important. A lot of season-best times and we saw a ton of kids trying new events. We rested some people for next week, but we had athletes that performed well across the board. It was fun to see them have fun," remarked Director of Track and Field Jamie Cook. "Next week is going to be a good atmosphere. We need to make sure that we're rested and ready to go for the conference meet. I'm hoping to see a ton of fans pack the stands here to support our Midshipmen."

Senior Carson Sloat led the day on the men's side as he set a school record in the 1,000m with a time of 2:22.41. Luke Nester followed 11-hundreths of a second behind Sloat to set the second-fastest 1,000m time in program history of 2:22.52.

Both runners bettered the record of 2:22.58 set by Ashwin Briggs back in 2021.

"I'm not shocked or surprise by Carson [Sloat] and Luke [Nester]. It's great to see them write their names in the record book," said Cook. "I know coach [Aaron] Lanzel trains those guys well and they are always prepared to run fast. They did a great job at setting the tone on the back end of the meet."

On the women's side Alex Wercinski continued the Mids big day in the 1,000m as she clocked a time of 2:47.87 to take first. It was the second-fastest time in program history and 36-hundreths of a second shy from tying the program record.

Five Midshipmen finished in the top-10 in the women's 800m. Mia-Claire Kezal won the event with a time of 2:12.64 and Kate Leddy followed just over one second later with a career-best time of 2:13.81 to claim second. Stella Perazzini (2:17.13), Susannah Heinz (2:17.27) and Reilly Nussbaum (2:17.30) finished the race fifth, sixth and seventh place, respectively, each with personal-best times.

Senior May McConkey had a dominant performance in the 3,000m with a winning time of 9:47.52. McConkey shattered her previous personal-best time by 20 seconds. Her time was also 15 seconds faster than runner-up Hannah Mack from Maryland.

Senior team captain Jacques Guillaume won the men's 200m for the first time this season with a time of 21.50. Sophomore Marcel Jackson placed third in the event with a career-best mark of 21.74.

Freshman Dane Eike won the 800m with a time of 1:52.35 against a large field of 12 other Navy runners.

It was a tight finish in the mile as Logan Flament (4:10.53) bested Zackery Poekert (4:10.65) for the victory. The times were career-best for both athletes.

Freshman Aiden Cartier won his first collegiate event in the 60m hurdles, setting a season-best time of 8.46 in the process.

The women's team of Susannah Heinz, Stella Perazzini, Reilly Nussbaum and Hailey Hodson won the 4x400 with a time of 4:04.78.

In the field events, Benjemen Schneider earned first place in the high jump with a height of 2.04m (6' 8.25") and Joseph Hurt won the triple jump with a distance of 14.19m (46' 6.75").

On the women's side, freshman Zoie Tesi won the high jump for the third time this season with a mark of 1.68m (5' 6"). Tesi has placed top-three finishers in the event at each meet in which she competed this season.

Gracie Emerick won the pole vault event with a height of 3.95m (12' 11.5") and Sophia Hill followed in second place with a mark of 3.80m (12' 5.5").

Keyshawn Dolford won the weight throw for the second time this season with the top mark of 17.19m (56' 4.75").

Jordynn Hutchinson won the shot put with a distance of 13.72m (45' 0.25") and also placed second in the weight throw with a mark of 18.05m (59' 2.75").
