Semifinalists
Josh Koderhandt Josh Koderhandt (Fr / 133 / Belleville, Ill.),
Andrew Cerniglia (So / 157 / Nazareth, Pa.) and
Jacob Koser (Jr / 197 / Dillsburg, Pa.) are among the four Navy wrestlers who will advance to Sunday's competition as the opening day of the 118th EIWA Championship held at Newman Arena at Bartels Hall in Ithaca, N.Y. came to a close Saturday evening. The Midshipmen stand seventh in the team standings with 40 points.
In addition to the semifinalists, Navy's
Val Park (Jr / 165 / Edmond, Okla.) also remains active by advancing via the consolation bracket.
None of Navy's four wrestlers still in action have clinched an NCAA berth as of Saturday evening. While all four are assured of placing among the top eight, Park needs to finish no worse than seventh to earn his first trip to the NCAA Championship. Koderhandt, the top seed at 133 pounds, must make the finals to an earn an NCAA bid, while both Cerniglia and Koser must finish fifth or better.
The top three teams in the standings missed the EIWA Championship a year ago due to the Ivy League sitting out competition for the 2020-21 campaign. Tenth-ranked Cornell finds itself atop the team standings with an eight-point cushion over Penn (94.5 - 86.5). Princeton stands third with 69.0 points, followed by Lehigh (62.5), Columbia (52.5), Binghamton (45.0), Navy (40.0), Army (38.0), Hofstra (32.5) and Drexel (30.5) and Harvard (30.5) who round out the top 10. Penn has all 10 of its wrestlers remaining in the competition, including eight in the championship bracket. Meanwhile, Cornell and Princeton have nine wrestlers still active and Lehigh and Columbia have eight. Twelve different schools will have wrestlers competing in the semis on Sunday when action resumes.
The EIWA will have 42 automatic bids to the NCAA Championship - 10 individual champions along with 32 pre-allocated spots - 4 at 125 / 2 at 133 / 4 at 141 / 4 at 149 / 5 at 157 / 7 at 165 / 4 at 174 / 3 at 184 / 5 at 197 and 4 at 285. Each qualifying tournament was awarded pre-allocations to the national tournament based on regular-season performance by conference wrestlers through February 20. The pre-allocations are determined using a sliding scale of a .700 winning percentage, top 30 coaches' rank and top 30 ratings percentage index (RPI) with a maximum of 29 pre-allocations per weight class. Wrestlers who fail to qualify via the EIWA Championship will be eligible for an at-large berth (43). The at-large announcement will be made on March 8, while brackets and seeding will be announced at 6:00 pm on March 9 via ncaa.com(.) All weight classes will consist of 33 wrestlers.
