Philly-Bound Navy Squash to Compete in Doubles and Individual National Championships

Team captain Millen Randell (Sr / Chicago, Ill. / 20-13 / 47-41 career), Henry Sparkman (Jr / Darien, Conn. / 21-12 / 36-22), Lucas Spiro (So / Buffalo, N.Y. / 18-15 / 33-27) and Alexander Orr (Fr / Haverford, Pa. / 23-11 / 23-11) will represent the Navy squash team at the 2023 U.S. Intercollegiate Doubles Championship set to begin Friday at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center in Philadelphia. Additionally, Matt Wang (So / Malvern, Pa. / 19-11 / 37-21) will compete at the College Squash Association National Collegiate Individual Championship which is also slated to start on Friday at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center. This will be the second-consecutive year the two championships will be held in conjunction with one another.

There are 32 teams entered to compete in the single-elimination U.S. Intercollegiate Doubles Championship, including Randell and Sparkman who will open the tournament with a 10:30 am match against Haverford's Ben Schiltz (Jr / Wilmington, Del.) and John Collins (Sr / Buffalo, N.Y.). Schiltz and Collins played the #6 and 7 positions, respecitvely for a Haverford squad that placed fifth in the Conroy Division last weekend in the CSA National Collegiate Team Championship. Schiltz produced a 10-10 mark (6-5 at #6) over the course of the season, while Collins was 11-9 (8-5 at #7).

Meanwhile, the tandem of Spiro and Orr will pair up for the first time in its doubles match against Chatham's Alejandro Cruz (Fr / Bogota, Colombia) and Alaaeldin Abdelkhalik (Sr / Cairo, Egypt) on Friday at 12:00 pm. Cruz played the #7 position in the CSA National Collegiate Team Championship and owned a 7-5 record over the season, while Abdelkhalik did not participate in the team championship but owned a 4-2 mark on the year. Chatham placed fifth in the Hoehn Division in the CSA National Collegiate Team Championship.

Navy's two teams are on opposite ends of the bracket and would not meet until the finals.

Navy has sent at least one team to compete in each of the 10 previously-played U.S. Intercollegiate Doubles Championships and a Navy team has played in the finals in eight of the last nine championships. Navy won five-consecutive doubles titles (2015 - Bill Kacergis & Senen Ubina, 2016 - Randy Beck & Jack Herold, 2017 Jack Herold and Senen Ubina, 2018 Michael Kacergis & Senen Ubina, 2019 Jack Lentz & Michael Kacergis) and six of the last eight (2013 - Andrew McGuinness & Hunter Beck).

The 2020-21 U.S. Intercollegiate Doubles Championships were not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year marks just the second time the doubles championship has been held in the spring, as it had previously been held in the fall prior to the start of the regular season.

The Pool Division represents the top 16 entrants in the CSA National Collegiate Individual Championship, while the Molloy Division is divided into four draws (North, South, East and West) and represents players seeded 17 through 80.  A double-elimination tournament, the winners of each of the brackets earn All-America honors.

Wang, who is competing in the individual championship for a second time in as many years, is seeded eighth in the Molloy North bracket and will face ninth-seeded Ahmed Amin of Brown in the opening round on Friday at 9:00 am. Amin was Brown's #1 player this season competing as a club program and recorded a 15-7 record. A win over Amin would pit him against the winner of the Joachim Chuah (Trinity) vs. Nicholas Gilman (Fordham) match on Friday at 2:45 pm.
