ANNAPOLIS, Md. - New program records by
Brahmir Vick and
Murphy Smith highlighted the Wesley A. Brown Invitational for the Navy track and field teams on Saturday at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis, Md. The meet did not have team scoring.
Vick recorded a time of 7.76 to win the 60m hurdles. He beat his own school record by just .01 seconds that he set at the 2022 Navy Invitational I. He also posted a time of 7.80 in the preliminaries, which is the third-best time in Navy history.
Smith won the 5,000m with a time of 13:55.15. He broke the previous school record set by Andrew Hanko (14:03.10) in 2011.
The Mids finished the meet with 15 program top-10 times / marks, 20 first-place finishes and 54 IC4A / ECAC qualifying times / marks.
"The men's 5,000m was the highlight of the meet. We had three runners break the school record with times under 14 minutes. It shows the exceptional job coach (Aaron) Lanzel has done preparing that group," said Director of Track and Field / Cross Country
Jamie Cook. "
Emily Boutin and
Sophie Compton were also terrific on the women's side in the 3,000m. They all did what we wanted them to do and that's compete hard. I was really impressed with our multi-athletes in their first competition of the season. Annie (Taylor) just missed out on a school record and
Thomas Christie had a huge personal record in the high jump to win the men's heptathlon. Everyone's performances in the 800m and 1,000m were solid as well. Coach (Chris) Johnson has continued to do a great job with that group.Â
"Anytime we can get the wins we had today really helps our competitive nature. When they have a chance to compete we want them to do so at the best of their ability and we saw that from a lot of athletes today. Very thankful for all the support from the fans again this weekend who came out to cheer us on despite all the harsh weather."Â
