Gayton Leads Strong Weekend For Track and Field With New School Record

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Mayu Gayton highlighted another great weekend for the Navy track and field teams by setting a new school record in the 100m on Saturday at the Navy Spring Invitational at Ingram Field in Annapolis, Md. The meet did not have team scoring.

Gayton posted a winning time of 11.73, which bested the previous record set by Loni Forsythe (11.74) in 2005 by 0.01. She was one of four mids to record a top-10 time / mark in Navy's final home meet of the season.

Additionally, the Mids recorded six top-10 times at the Virginia Challenge, which was held Friday and Saturday at Lannigan Field in Charlottesville, Va. The Virginia Challenge also didn't have team scoring.

"It was really exciting seeing our senior class compete at home one final time. We had much better weather toward the end of the second day and we saw a lot of great performances. Multiple athletes competed in different events and the multi event group got a full meet under their belt for the first time this season. The team wasn't afraid of trying new things today and that helped them see something they haven't seen before," said Director of Track and Field / Cross Country Jamie Cook. "We did well across the board, but we still have a lot of work to do in the next couple of weeks to get ready for the conference championship. We have a good experience in store for everyone next week at the Penn Relays too. For this team to be around that kind of exposure and the excitement of the sport is good for them. We're excited about the opportunity to go to a historic venue and show what we can do as a team. We'll see a lot of good competitors and that will really help us as we go into the conference meet."
