LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Navy track and field teams concluded the first day of the Patriot League Outdoor Championship on Friday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium in Lewisburg, Pa.
The men's team stands in first place through six events with 78 points. The Mids claimed victories in the 10,000m, pole vault and javelin to build a 19-point lead over second-place Army.
The women's team ended the first day in fourth place with 40.33 points through six events.
Mayu Gayton highlighted the opening day for the women with a new school record in the 100m. She shattered the program record with a time of 11.60 to place second in the preliminary race and qualify for the finals tomorrow. Gayton bested her previous team record time by 0.13, which she posted two weeks ago at the Navy Spring Invitational.
"We had a great start to the meet with the men's 10,000m group. They came out and did what they had to do and ran a strategic race. Hats off once again to coach (Aaron) Lanzel for getting that group ready and starting the meet off the way they did," said Director of Track and Field / Cross Country
Jamie Cook. "For Walker (Rudisaile) to win his third-straight title in the pole vault is a tremendous accomplishment. It's really hard to be that consistent in the pole vault, but that's what he has done his entire career. Coach (Rory) Quiller has done a fantastic job with him and also
Alayna Schloeder and
Gracie Emerick on the women's side, who placed second and third. Those performances were really important for our team.
"Braden (Presser) has dealt with some adversity over the course of the season, but handled it very well. He came back today and had a big throw to win the javelin, which helped set the tone for the rest of the javelin group. The women's javelin was the last event of the day and that gave us a lot of excitement heading into tomorrow. Renny (Murphy) and Sarah (Perico) both set personal records on their final throws of the day to make big jumps in the standings. That was one of the best javelin competitions I've seen in the Patriot League. We wanted to build momentum by qualifying as many people as we could for the finals tomorrow and we did a great job of that. Some of our kids were out there for over 10 hours competing in multiple events, but that's what this meet requires. We're anxious to get back out there tomorrow and compete."
