WORCESTER, Mass. – The Navy men's track & field team broke three meet records and tied another two en route to winning its 11th-consecutive Patriot League Outdoor Championship and 12th overall on Saturday afternoon at Hart Track in Worcester, Mass. The Mids topped second-place Army by 35 points.
Naval Academy Director of Track & Field
Jamie Cook was named the Patriot League Men's Coach of the Year for the seventh-consecutive outdoor championship, while the Mids'
Nathan Kent was named the Patriot League Men's Track Athlete of the Meet for the second-straight year.
"This team competed very hard and it found a way to get it done," said Cook. "Anytime you win a championship it is meaningful. I'm excited for this group and the senior class in particular to go out having never lost its entire time here. I'm proud of their (the seniors) efforts and what they contributed to the program."
The 4x100m relay team of
Marcel Jackson, Kent,
Jonah Johnson and
Tyler Yurich broke the league championship meet record and tied for the fastest mark in program history, winning the race in 39.64. The same quartet of runners originally set the school mark in April.
Kent won his second-consecutive 400m league title, this time breaking an 18-year conference championship record with a time of 46.19 (ninth-fastest time in Navy history). The previous record was held by Navy's own Paul Harris, who timed in at 46.77 in 2007.
Kent earned his third gold medal of the day when he tied the meet record and broke the school record in the 200m (20.56). Yurich clocked a career-best time of 21.06 to finish in fourth place, while Johnson also ran a personal-best time of 21.13 to place fifth.
"Kent executed everything perfectly this weekend," remarked Cook. "He conserved his energy in the trials. He gave us a great leg in the 4x100m relay to help set a school record. Winning the 200m was probably the most impressive thing in the meet. For him to run a 20.56 in legal wind is awesome."
Yurich, Jackson and Johnson also competed in the 100m sprint. Yurich, who placed third, ran a 10.56 and narrowly beat out Jackson who clocked a 10.57 to finish in fourth place. Johnson finished in sixth place with a time of 10.66.
The 4x400m relay squad of
Pete deJonge, Kent,
