CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Navy track and field teams set 12 new program top-10 times / marks on Saturday at the Virginia Grand Prix in Charlottesville, Va. The meet didn't have team scoring.
Highlighting the meet was
Stephanie Jacobs with a new school record in the pole vault. The senior recorded a height of 4.01m (13' 1.75") to place third. Additionally, Jacobs is the first Mid to post a height of at least 4.00m.
"The team was excited to make a trip to Virginia and compete against some ACC schools. I felt we had the largest presence at the meet and we looked very strong across the board," said Director of Track and Field / Cross Country
Jamie Cook. "Ending the night with a school record by
Stephanie Jacobs was awesome to see. Her and coach Quiller have been working really hard and it was exciting to see that be put on display.
"Our athletes put in a lot of work over the last few weeks and it showed with their performances.
Joshua Boamah and
Autumn Nicholas started us off on a great note with two excellent performances in the hammer throw.
Jacques Guillaume had a huge presence on the track with wins in the 200m and 400m to go along with competing in both relay races.
Molly Mangan and
Jia Anderson both stood out with their great performances as did a lot of our runners in the women's 1500m.
Alex Rizzo in the 800m also was a great race to watch."
Jia Anderson knocked .09 seconds off her best 100m hurdles time to win the race and finish with the second-best time in school history at 13.66. The freshman has posted the second and third-best times in Navy history this season.
Molly Mangan won the 400m with the second-fastest Navy time at 53.95. She now owns four of the five-best times in the event in school history, including the program record.
Anderson and Mangan joined
Mayu Gayton and
Sabrina Sutter to place second in the 4x100m relay with the eighth-best time in Navy history at 46.32. Saturday marked the fourth time the squad finished with a top-10 time this season.
Alex Rizzo placed third in the 800m with the second-fastest time in program history at 1:48.18. The senior now owns the second and third-best 800m times in Navy's record book.
Jonathan Simmons,
Nathan Kent,
Mike Quispe and
Jacques Guillaume combined to win the 4x400m relay with the second-best time in school history at 3:08.16.
Emily Boutin (second place) and
Ellie Abraham (third place) both posted top-10 times in the 1,500m. Boutin recorded the fourth-fastest time at 4:25.26, while Abraham ended with the seventh-best time at 4:25.56.
Brahmir Vick finished first in the 110m hurdles after tying the 10th-fastest time in program history at 13.95 seconds.
Joshua Boamah recorded the second top-10 mark in the hammer throw of his career. He won the event with the sixth-farthest throw in school history at 64.22m (210' 8").
Autumn Nicholas posted the 10th-best mark in Navy history with a distance of 57.54m (188' 9") to place third in the women's hammer throw.
Hannah Lowenstein finished in second place in the high jump after tying the 10th-highest jump in Navy history at 1.71m (5' 7.25").
The Mids recorded an additional 43 times / marks that met IC4A / ECAC qualifying standards.
Jay Evans (second place) and
Jonah Johnson (third place) both posted a time of 10.72 in the 100m. Vick (10.78) finished in fifth place and
Tyler Yurich (10.93) placed eighth for the additional qualifying 100m times.
Guillaume won the 200m and 400m with times of 21.13 and 46.78, respectively.
Kent finished right behind Guillaume in the 400m at 47.20 to place second.
Evans (second place), Johnson (fourth place) and Yurich (seventh place) also recorded qualifying times in the 200m with times of 21.38, 21.57 and 22.02, respectively.
Additionally, Guillaume, Evans, Johnson and Yurich placed second in the 4x100m with a time of 41.57.
The squad of Evans,
Tymique Goodman,
Levi Knobloch and
Jayshon Dubose placed fourth in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:15.64.
Ian Bartlett (1:50.39) and Simmons (1:51.19) placed sixth and seventh, respectively in the 800m.
Emily Ettrich placed fourth in the women's 800m with a time of 2:11.67.
Sophie Compton (seventh place),
McKenna Brophy (11th place) and
Mia-Claire Kezal (12th place) posted additional qualifying 1500m times with finishes of 4:29.05, 4:32.56 and 4:32.79, respectively.
Four Mids in the men's 1500m posted times that met IC4A standards.
Jack Mariano (ninth place) and
Luke Nester (10th place) finished back-to-back with times of 3:48.63 and 3:51.33, respectively.
Matt Newell (3:52.59) and
Jack Lange (3:54.46) recorded the additional two qualifying times to place 12th and 14th, respectively.
Murphy Smith took fourth place in the 5,000m with a time of 14:33.22.
Garrison Clark crossed the finish line immediately after Smith to place fifth with a time of 14:35.19.
Dubose (third place) and
Baynes Autrey (fourth place) had the next best times for Navy in the 110m hurdles with times of 14.62 and 14.68, respectively.
Annie Lemelin posted the additional ECAC qualifying time in the women's 100m hurdles to place fourth with a time of 14.51. She also helped record a time of 3:46.90 in the 4x400m with
Kylie Bedard, Sutter and Mangan to place third.
The Mids recorded four qualifying times in the men's 3,000m steeplechase to place fifth through eighth.
Brett Brady had the top time for Navy at 8:57.82. He was followed by
Tom Fodor (9:02.02),
Ben Countiss (9:06.00) and
Joe Reimann (9:10.31).
Walker Rudisaile led Navy with a second-place finish in the men's pole vault with a height of 4.86m (15' 11.25").
Boamah recorded additional qualifying marks in the shot put and discus. He won the shot put with a throw of 17.26m (56' 7.5") and placed second in the discus with a distance of 50.40m (165' 4").
David Huizenga earned the victory in the discus with a throw of 53.47m (175' 5"). He also placed fifth in the hammer throw with a distance of 54.78m (179' 9").
Dane Vernor (third place) and
Sam Kwatkosky (fourth place) also had qualifying marks in the hammer throw with distances of 59.24m (194' 4") and 58.19m (190' 11"), respectively.
Collin Greene's throw of 16.23m (53' 3") earned him second place in the shot put.
Nicholas added a qualifying mark in the discus (46.39m / 152' 2") to place fourth.
Dara Hulstein placed fifth in the hammer throw with a distance of 54.33m (178' 3").
Navy won both the men's and women's javelin.
Braden Presser claimed first for the men with a throw of 70.25m (230' 5") and
Renny Murphy won the women's event with a mark of 45.33m (148' 8").
Up Next
Navy will compete in two meets next week. The Mids will play host to the Navy Spring Invitational II, which is slated for Friday (11 a.m.) and Saturday (9:30 a.m.) at Ingram Field. Navy will also send athletes to compete in the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., from Thursday through Saturday.
"We'll have some of our multi athletes competing at home and send some of our distance and mid-distance runners back down to Virginia next weekend," added Cook. "We have some big teams coming in for our next home meet. We need to continue to improve, work on different things and get ready for next weekend's competition."
